Boxer engine question???????
#1
I am currently having an argument with a Honda driver on another bulletin board and he said to me that the number 3 cylinder in the Impreza runs 100 degrees hotter than the other ones.Secondly he says that there are 250,000 DOHC VTEC engines and not one warranty claim???????????? And has anyone here owned an Integra type R?

It was on driven or top gear (I cant remeber which one) recently that Honda had not had one VTEC engine failure.
Not sure about the hotter cylinder 3 but most of the engine failures seem to be connected with cylinder number 3. I seem tio remember reading on here that the clearance on cylinder 3 is less than the others.

I'm not sure about the no3 cylinder on an Impreza but I've heard about the V-TEC engines a few times.
I used to own a CRX V-TEC and in over 4 years of ownership it never missed a beat. And that was with revving the b****x off it all the time...redlined at 8K!
Changed to a Scooby 6 months ago and had a few niggles already. Seems completely unreliable by comparison.
Cheers

I have not heard that there is a problem with the number three cylinder. But the 'Training the WRX' hnadbook states the no 2 cylinder runs week at high boost.
Just to prove this, after I bought my first WRX RA the piston rings went on the no 2 cylinder. After replacing the engine I found the engine was pinking rather bad due to a JAP modified ECU. This caused the failure.
I have also had a 2.2 VTEC prelude, and in my opinion this engine was far better than the Scoobys, 185BHP with no turbo.

According to Power Enginering quoted by Banzai (but can you trust the press) number 3 cylinder can run upto 100 degree's hotter because (and this is how i read it) it's the last to be lubricated.

Thanks Kevin:-)
Ask your new arch-enemy how his car goes 4 up, that should rattle his cage!!
I heard the same rumour when I had a prelude 2.3i 4WS (pretty shape), they are excellent engines but they still don't sound like the scoob and as far as I was concerned the car was boring and bland, particularly because (flame suit on) the car never went wrong, there was hardly anything you could do to modify it. My girlfriend had the car after me and just sold it on 195,000 miles, it never missed a beat!
I'd take the scoob anyday, problems and all!

There is a problem with the Subaru engines and number 3 does run up to 100 degrees hotter.
The Police in Hull recently blew the big end in their marked Impreza Turbo and I think it was number 3.
According to a friend who works in the main dealership in Hull the 2000 spec engine has a few problems.
Nice to know now I've bought one
