Default Scooby...which one to go for?

Hi All

I have to admit i am a bit of a fraud as i don't actually have a scooby as of yet. But in my defence i am looking to get one in the next 6 months and hence why i'm here :-)

Just had a look at parkers trying to work out which one i should go for....ooo so many to choose from. If i had my way i'd go for a P1 one but i don't want to become that good a friend to the insurance man. LOL

Any how.. I've seen that they did a 2.0GL4WD Saloon. This one suposedly had 16v which some of the later 2.0L didn't..weired. Just wanted to check a couple of things

1) Does this model have any other names..WRX..or anything as i just did a search on autotrader and am getting mixed results.
2) What should i look for when poking around one
3) How much am i looking to pay..also in reality how much does it cost to run a scooby...hehe

Don't get me wrong i'm not tight!! Just curious.

Cheers for all your help.

Sounds like a normally aspirated Sport and not a turbo.

http://www.sidc.co.uk/faq.htm Loads of info on classic Impreza's

Classics that are WRX and STi's are all imports.

It was from the newage onwards that thr UK models were referrrd to as WRX's including STi type UK's

Also depends on your budget, my advice would be to go for the lastest model with known history you can afford.

That would be the one. As much as i would like a turbo the insurance at the min will just kill me. Figured it would be a good start to convience the insurance man that i wont trash a 4WD car :-)

AWD Flat-Four is a good package, - no-more wheel-spins, fun to drive on twisty roads, great soundtrack, etc. etc.

Turbos are expensive to run in terms of insurance and fuel and skimping on regular servicing is a big time no-no.

Problem is that if you catch the tuning bug you'll end up buying a turbo anyway.

Hi Jung,

Right, where to begin. The scoobies do a 1.6GL i think but the one to go for before the turbo is the Sport. It looks exactly like a turbo but without the vents on the bonnet.
My brothers friend has a sport and its very rapid indeed. You're looking at around 0-60 in 8 seconds which is as fast as a 2.5 V6 Vectra, its pretty fast.
He even creates the sound of a dumpvalve himself while driving! He's ditched it once and driven it straight over a roundabout since he's had it. Thrashed it beyond believe and he has had no problems.

When looking for one, take your time. I spent over three months with no car and having to bike to work before I found the right one. I would definately look for a full service history and a uk car. Not too concerned with the milleage unless you get a P1 and then anything over around 50,000 miles your gonna want a rebuild.
Look at lots, check the engine ticks over nicely and if you do end up plumping for a turbo model, check for black, grey smoke on boost and take it to the redline (once warmed up of course) as many tend to suffer from stuttering at around 4000rpm.
Generally, there should be no rust whatsoever. Also check to see if the rocker covers (on each side of the block) are not leaking onto the exhaust and that the crank shaft seal is not leaking onto the manifold. Also check for when its had its major service as this can be costly when buying a car that needs its belts doing asap.
You'll also find that the clutch judders, which some say is normal and even Subaru admit it happens.

Now, how much...how much is a piece of string??
Depends how old you are and what you've claimed for. I'm 23 and I'm paying around 1600 pounds for fully comp insurance with legal aid on a Turbo 2000.
I know older drivers with lots of points and a few claims paying around 800 pound.
Your looking around 30 miles to the gallon for a scooby sport and a bit less (unless you thrash it everywhere) for the turbo version.
Obviously top tier road tax.

Hope this helps, to be fair, reading on here gives you nightmares but in reality the impreza engines are pretty bomb proof.

Hey Andy

Thanks for the advice. I've done some shopping around and best price i've found is 1371 for a turbo and i can get it down to 470 ish if i go for a sport.

I can believe they go on for ever i've got a rover 620 at the min (honda version) and that's just the same.

Is the sport model the one with 8v or 16v?

Cheers

HI Guys,

I'm with admiral, they were pretty much the only company that would touch me under 25 and without a tracker.

I'm sure that the scooby sport is exactly the same as the turbo model, without the turbo so you're looking at 2lr 16v. Try these links, most are very useful for model information etc:

These are companies that specialise in parts and upgrades etc.

http://www.sidc.co.uk - this site is an absolute must if you want to buy an impreza, look at the FAQ and the links to members sites, they are chock full of info

don't forget aswell - http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk very important!!

Nice one thanks for that.

Appears that my scooby hopes may be put back a little bit right now.

I'm insured under my mums name and have been for 5 years. When i joined Direct Line they said that it was possible to transfer it to my name as long as the insurer was prepared to write a letter saying that i was on the policy.

Unfortunatly they couldn't so my plan was to move to direct line for a year or 2 and the move the no claims to my name.

Now been told it can't be done....GRRRRR

Anyonw know an insurnance company who will do it??

Cheers

Hi there.
I am a 30 yr old with 9 points and 2 yrs no claim and I have a MY99 UK turbo 2000 and I pay £674 fully comp on a limited mileage policy (8000 miles a year) through norwich union. Was well surprised as I was getting quotes of between 1k and 2k so glad I gave them a try.
Maybe it is true what the advert says about being quoted happy!!

Yeah you are right about the call center. The bloke I spoke to was a nightmare and didnt really understand me that well as to what car it was. So maybe the reason it is so cheap is perhaps I am now insured for 1.1 saxo instead of a scoob!!

this is true...just think it's time to put a car in my name really.

I've finally got my bike insured in my name...

It's daft as i've always been the main driver, the no claims in reality are mine...gits

Don't let your insurance company hear that, as a named driver you are only supposed to drive the car 'occasionally'.

Basically what i did for about six months before ownership I hit the websites with my details, tried different cars etc. Got quotes saved so when the time came to actually purchase it was easy.

Have you thought about something like a Renault 5 GT turbo or Renault 19/Clio 16v until you have built up some no claims. Those cars are pretty rapid and have a following. Something to get your teeth into. Might be best starting on the GT turbo, get you into the mindset of owning and maintaining a turbocharged car.

Try Co-op and tesco insurance, usually they are really good for the first year but then for the second they don't really give you much discount. They also won't price match to keep you (even if its for around 20 pounds) on their books.

I've managed to get me driving it all the time sorted, have changed the insurance to say that i am the main driver and that it is kept at my address which is pretty good.

Was thinking about other cars last night...just not sure. I think what i might do is carry on as i am for another year and a bit on the rover. And finish my other car, so that i can sell that...finguress crossed by then i should be sorted with direct line's named drivers build up NCD. Just feel the need to have a new toy to play with really and have always limed the scooby.

On the bright side it means i've got another year to save so could maybe get a newer shape one :-)

We shall see.
