Default Rip off tyre dealers

I live near a small norfolk town with at least three tyre dealers etc, as my scoob is coming up to having a couple of tyres on the front(size 225/40/18) I asked my wife to ring up yesterday for some prices,Well shocked wasent the word! LOL
The cheapest she was quoted was £131 a tyre,This was for a firestone!? Another dealer quoted £145 a tyre for a toyo but said it was the only make they did at this size!, so out of interest i went out today to the dealers to see for myself, The results? lol
The dealer who quoted me £145 for a toyo still insited it was the only make they could get, BUT i was quoted £131 a tyre...........
The next place ( a ford fast fit) the price was the same but not cheap(£140 for a cheapo...).......
The next place was a real head turner(big multi national tyre company)....there was a woman in front of me who had had a puncture.... in a pram wheel of a tyre tyre, the bloke over the counter looked over it and told her it was Very dangerous and illegal( i looked over it too and it only had a nail in it!) and she would need a new tyre at £55, I did not like the way they spoke to her so i left.......But they quoted for the firestone!
And the result.....gonna buy some online, and pay the con artists to fit them for me, should save a packet!

See if you can find a depot that has an onsite workshop, there is a great one in the south (obviously no good to you) called Micheldever, they are one of the main importers in the uk for Kuhmo tyres (Far eastern brand) super cheap for strange Jap sizes and normal jap sizes..

Alot of people stick their noses up at Kuhmo's.. Why ?? because of the bloody name... They are EXCELLENT tyres.. I went through 3 sets of Kuhmo Ecsta Supra's on my LC never had a problem, never had a failure even with the odd Donut and burnout..

The only thing I would say is they are a soft compound and wear quite fast, but hey who gives a damn?

I use Falkens .... good life as well as grip.

I have only used Michellins and got 30,000miles out of them ..... but, thought I would give the Falkens a try .. seem OK at the moment.

I've had a couple of sets of Falken FK452's and they're excellent, and having tried both the T1s and T1r I'd suggest that they're a match for either, however unpopular that opinion may be.

The kuhmo's are pretty good tyres also, may not have the same name / rep as GoodYear, Bridgestone etc etc, but they do the job at the right money.

Try either www.mytyres.net or ebay- I use a supplier called "mill auto services" http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Kumho-Tyres

i have used falkens in the past and found them to wear quite fast on the inner and outer edges, i swear they make then thinner on the inside/outside edges

the bridgestones that came with my legacy wheels gave very nice wet weather grip and the fronts lasted me about a year, the winter wheels i have on now came with some crap "GT" tyres and they last forever
they grip really bad in the wet, but that makes it a bit more fun as it seams to want to give a lot more power oversteer

i need 2 new tyres for my legacy wheels, unsure about replacing them with bridgestones or just putting something a bit cheaper on.

Just had a look on mytyres.net.

What the hell are Linglong's, the tread patern looks very similar to a Toyo. Would'nt it be nice if they were toyo's under a different name and at £60 a pop for 215x35x18's a right bargain, something tells me they may not be what I wish they were.

Anybody used these.

This happens a lot, Starrunner or something are Avon under a different brand, and Avon are made by Pierreli or something like that anyway It all gets confusing.

I know everyone probably thinks they're a s**t company but it's always worth doing a check for prices on this site:

http://www.kwik-fit.com/index.asp

Personally i have used their "at-home" service when I had the Merc, even though it was an extra £20. They use contractors who tend to charge less for the tyres so it still worked out cheaper than getting the Branch to order the tyres in. 24hour turnaround usually too.

Worth a look even if it's only for reference.

most Tyre depots will fit for between £5 - £10 a corner (thou the ones near you may not now & tbh I don't think I would give them the business)

Costco do 225/40/18 in Michelin PS2 for £127 per tyre fitted!!
Best I could get at Kwick fit was £140 ish per tyre

Kwik Fit have NEVER been known for selling tyres at decent prices, unless you can get a big business contract with them.

The markup on tyres is HUGE. In fairness to smaller dealers, if they can't get a good price from the wholesaler then they can't pass a fair price onto you. Shopping around is the only answer.

Make sure you get a tyre that matches the weight of the car as well. The Toyo t1s for example is only a 88W whereas the t1r is a 92Y.

Dont forget the load index is PER tyre, 88 is 1.2tonne per tyre.. I'm sure the Impreza has an axle/kerb weight of less than 2.4 tonne

And the letters you specify are speed ratings, nothing to do with load.

[Davey] careful or you may be laughing your way to an early grave. Dynamic effects e.g. cornering or speeding through a depression will greatly increase the load on the tyre. A worthwhile read. Depends on the manufacturer's recommendation, 88 OK for turbo but not STi.

Yes the W and Y are speed ratings, however as speedking(thankyou) points out the Sti requires a 92 rated tyre due to load.
