Default Servicing- main dealer or local?

At what point do you say sod the expensive main dealers and use your trustworthy local garage for your servicing?

Surely its the same oil, parts etc?

My local main dealer has now gone and the nearest one now is a good 50 miles away and a day off work to take it.

I had a rover 600 turbo about 7 years ago.... took it to the local rover dealer, they found loads wrong(so they said....) cost me @£550 for an oil and filter change plus other work(seals and gaskets etc...), The next day when i pulled the dipstick out there was no oil at all on it..... I rang them and they had the car in right away..... As i watched THEY put 2-3 litres of oil in it to bring it up to the mark......
Not even an apology!
Bought a new Proton Satria GTI(great little car) first oil and filter change(£120), guess what... checked the next day.... off the dipstick!,same story...
These were main dealers! Needless to say all my work is now done by local garages!, and in 4 years have not had a similar problem.......
Just my two penyth

Never had a problem with Subaru main dealer....BMW yes VW yes Fiat Yes. If you find a good garage they're worth their weight in gold.

had one in today that had been to a local garage they used a fram oil filter, as it was running there was a steady drip drip of oil coming from the filter needless to say the customer wasn't happy that the under side of his car was now plastered in oil.

Mine went to the Main Dealer whilst under warranty - it helps if you make a claim I reckon??

Then its DIY (probably the BEST option, or local specialist)

Guess the only thing it affects is the re-sale.

Not applicable though if traded in.
