Sorry to hear about your Scooby.

If I understand it correctly, they should be able too, they won't perform nearly as well though, bad petrol and sustained high speed driving can cause problems...are you telling us the whole truth about your speed lol! You'll know more when the engine is stripped and the mechanics can determine the precise nature of the failure.

IMHO you should always run a performance car on SUL, at the very best, you won't be getting the most out of your car on UL as the car will retard ignition and this will knock back performance.....at the worst....

Did you get any warning whatsoever, no CEL, no oil pressure light, no minor change in the cars behaviour.... If a car can run on UL then using UL shouldn't be a problem all things being present and correct (with the performance proviso) However, SUL does give you better det protection, esp useful at sustained higher speeds where temps are significantly higher. Maybe you just got a contaminated batch of fuel. It's all guess work till the engine is stripped.

there was no warning no lights or owt just loss of power and smoke out of the **** end one of the 2 hose that run past the intercooler had come off and there was oil spilt around that area. so i put it back on checked the oil which wasnt that low left it to cool down topped it then started it up saw the engine warning light was on and rang the garage.

I was told by my dealer that the STi should always be run on 97+ octane. Use 95 in an emergency, but don't drive it hard. I'm sure I read a Prodrive statement that was similar.

Huh? So after you heard the funny noise at 90 you stopped, put 'a hose' back on, started back up and saw CEL, then limped home?

How can a melted valve cause 'a hose' to come off? And what was this hose that came off - you said oil was spilt everywhere, so was it an oil hose? Running past the intercooler?

it sounds like you may have just popped off the intercooler hose, causing massive overfuelling and no power. A CEL can be triggered with lambda issues caused by overfuelling, misfires and a few other obscure side affects.

Good luck.

My MY03 STI has 'use only 97 ron' sticker on fuel filler cap and I would not risk anything less. I always use Optimax and in an emergency I might put £5 at most 95 ron in and drive v cautiously till next Optimax garage

The Mechanic diagnosed a melted valve - just by looking at it

Top bloke that .... much too good to be driving a breakdown truck at all hours of the night

Good luck.
seen this happen to an impreza. when it does it sounds like engine is running on 3 cylinders and also black smoke out the exhaust and that is at idle, god knows what the effects would look/sound like at 90 (kmh).

Do you have these phrases saved on a word document, ready for copying and pasting at the first opportunity?

Yes, odd that as the manual then states 95 ron is ok.

probably done a piston that way the excessive blowby could have popped the breather hose off and lack of combustion mixed with the oil that would make it's way past the piston would have caused the smoke out the back.

No, and some haven't seen them ..........

As long as they apply I will keep posting ... the "blown engine if you use a drop of bad petrol" keeps cropping up - so, sensible posts like mine should counteract them .....
