http://www.rac.co.uk/web/carbuying/vehicle_data_search/

This will tell you if the car is still on record, i.e. not been scrapped.

Oh dear, just typed in the reg of a impreza turbo that I wrote off. It was in a very sorry state last time I saw it. It was bent in half. I feel sorry for the 3 owners that have had it since...

The RAC site is great but doesn't help if the reg has been changed, a private plate fitted etc, which then screws the results if you even get any at all. Would love to be able to see the DVLA database to see the history of my first car etc - when it was sold afterwards, where it went to and when it was last scrapped or declared SORN. Just for fun, as well as memories.

But it's not going to happen.

I'll think you'll find it does

My private plate has been on all my recent cars, and all returned the right results..

If the car has JUST got the plate it will take a while for the RAC to get the latest data for the DVLA.

I stand corrected. Did not know that, but cheers for pointing it out.

You can get better info about current VED data from

www.vehiclelicense.gov.uk , click on vehicle enquiry and enter the reg number and make. Will show you when the last tax expired, so you can see when the car died.

Don't the DVLA give out current owner details and addresses for a small fee. If i remember correctly I am sure you can attain these details by saying they were a witness to a bump or involved in a bump and you took down the reg no. as they drove off, I believe the fee is £5...... may be a little lie, but to what lenghts will you go to purchase that memorable first motor

I done the same thing, searched for a car that i had written off (my first car mk1 fiesta xr2).
After seeing it had a few owners since i decided to track it down. Put an ad on the xr owners club site, and tracked it down withing a few days!
The owner showed me his pics of it and it did look very good, must have been rung by someone. Bit sad to see the last pic though as it was sitting in his garage, stripped and vandalised.
RIP XR2!..................AGAIN!

If you send in a letter addressed to.

Fee Paying Enquiries,
DVLA,
Longview rd.
Morriston.
Swansea
SA6 7JL

with a £5.00 postal order made out to DVLA, plus a covering note giving your name, address and your vehicle details and ask for the vehicle history report. They'll do a complete printout of the vehicle record from when it was first registered in the UK to present day, including all names and addresses of previous owners plus other stuff like VIC info & so on. Much cheaper than an HPI report. Does take 5 days though.

BTW, the quote above does work, if you can come up with a "valid reason" plus a fiver, they will give you the info.

How do I know.......I work there, supporting their kit.
