reading fault codes

Morning all
had the eml flick on the other day so though I'd better read the codes. The advice I was following states that:
The long pulses (1.3 Seconds) indicate Tens and the short pulses (0.2 Seconds) indicate ones. Pulses are separated by Short Pauses (0.2 Seconds), multiple codes are separated by a Long Pause (1.8 Seconds).
But when I did it (my 97 turbo uk) I got: 3 long pulse and one short pulse, i.e. there were no short pulses separating the 'real' pulses. So I take this to read 31: TPS.
Does this sound right or could I be missing something?
Cheers

The other thing to bare in mind is you can have more than one check code. These are pulsed in order and then rotated back to the start again (did I explain myself there?)
