Digital Aerials
Having a bit of a nightmare finding reliable info about getting one fitted
Sofar, on my quest to find out what I need, it seems that someone has to come out and value the job.
I understand the requirement for the bloke to do this however it seems to me that the digital aerial industry is full of "sharp intake of breath" merchants and "Gonna cost ya mate cos your doofry will need replacing" idiots. Then they have the bollox to say, If the quote is acceptable, I'll have to do the job there and then **** off, what happened to shopping around?
Why can't I just explain to a local company on the phone, where I live (So they know what signal strength they are working with) What I want (An aerial upgrade so that I can take advantage of my TV's inbuilt Digital box) and a description of the house (So they can asses how long the job will take)
Call me a cynic but it seems that they will come out, drink tea, tell me that I have no chance unless I buy their most expensive aerial and cabling and that I need a special this and that
It can't be rocket science, have you seen and spoken to a typical fitter!!
Anyway, anyone had any good/bad experiences that they can offer advice on?
Not after a specific recommendation, just things to look out for.

Mikey .. youll prolly need a 'Wideband Aerial' (better reception across the whole band-width) rather than a 'Set parameter' aerial.... ideally get 'double screened coaxial cable so as to keep as much signal as possible...and Robert will be your Mothers Brother!

To tide me over on a house move as I awote [new word there???] SKY to get their dish in gear I bought a £7 aerial from Screwfix and some coax cable. Connected it all up and popped the aerial on top of the garden wall [with a stone on top of it] and hey presto ghost free digital TV for a tenner!
Such was my remarkable success I shall be buying a ladder and mounting said £10 affair higher up and releasing the stone back to its natural habitat so I can continue to use the freeview decoder
Bottom line is the chap fitting this aerial for you has to feed his kids and pay speeding fines like the rest of us. I would be happy to pay him £50 - £70 labour without feeling conned.
