Default Well we found out what the whining noise was...

Suspected gearbox issues but turns out it was the front nearside wheel bearing..

Didnt sound anything like a wheel bearing on its way out, and this wasnt the side that had the loose hub nut!

I think this hub and stub are NLS!

I have to say, I've never seen a roller bearing go like that before.

Still, cheaper than a gearbox hey !

Had a crack at repairing it, first time I've ever had to hone a hub lol!

Dont think the stub axle is very healthy though

If I were you I'd replace the parts rather than refurb them. The stresses caused by the breakdown could have caused hairline cracks in the carrier, plus they'll be marginally out of shape and size tolerance, which will cause the new bearings to fail.

Dont worry it will only be a temporary fix to get out of trouble until a replacement hub and stub can be sourced.

Davey, was it a high pitch sound or a low dull sound as if something is rubbing...

Was it all the time or sometimes... more when you go around corners and bends... my rear passenger wheel area is like this... I thought it may be bearings...

The noise sounded like transmission noise, it occured at 40mph + and only when accelerating. At no point did I ever suspect a wheel bearing.. From my experience a duff bearing has a deep drone to it, and before it lets go you'll hear pleanty of noise. This was obviously on its way out for a long time but it never really made its self obvious.

need to find something local , got to get it done ASAP, will fit a new bearing as a temporary fix if it comes to it.

Still not managed to source a replacement hub

I should add this happened on the M25 at 70mph, the wheel just locked up!! Luckilly the missus is a good driver and didnt lose control. She managed to get safely onto the hard shoulder.

Just got a replacement hub from Bucks Subaru Centre, they also had the turbo inlet pipe i've been looking for for ages!

Most I've ever paid for salvage but didnt really have much of a choice
