Default Thinking of buying a Type R STI

Hi,

I thinking of buying a 1998 Subaru Impreza Type R. here is the spec:

Manual 5 speed, Saloon, 37,000 miles, MonoTone White. ONE OWNER IN THE UK, SUABRU SERVICE HISTORY ( JUST HAD FULL ENGINE REBUILD LESS THAN 1100 MILES AGO ), WARRANTED UNTILL FEBUARY 2007 ), Power Steering, Front Electric Windows, Privacy Glass, 17" 6 Spoke GOLD Alloy Wheels, Type R Rear Spoiler, Type R Sports Exhaust System, Momo Leather Steering Wheel & Gear ****, Electric Heated FOLD IN Door Mirrors, Twin Air Bags, Adjustable Steering Column, CLIMATE CONTROL AIR CONDITIONING, Kenwood CD Player, CAT 1 Remote Central Locking Alarm & Immoblisier, CENTRAL DIFF CONTROL, Intercooler Water Spray, Red & Grey Type R Sports Interior £11,995.

Is that a good buy? What are things I should be looking out for?

And can anybody give me an idea how offen I will need to service the Car and around how much it will cost?

Thanks

Servicing intervals are every 6000 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first.

Not sure what a Type R spoiler/sports exhaust & interior are though? They should be the just the same as the normal STi stuff.

Any idea where the re-build was done? And any idea how it was run in?

12 grand.... Dont be silly LOL

Oh, and it would be worth finding out if its been mapped for UK fuel. If it hasnt, make sure its been run on super unleaded and octane booster.

you may or may not be aware of this but the type R has very short gearing which is excellent for acceleration but in 5th gear at motorway speeds you will be reving fairly high, so its not any good for cruising economy wise. Not a problem i guess unless u plan on commuting any distance in it.

I do 120 mile commute in mine fairly regularly, you soon get used to it, after a few weeks, you'll stop going to change for an imaginary 6th gear

Why? I think if you had a closer look, you'll find there are loads if classic STi's about that have had re-builds. To be fair, its kind of a bonus, someone else has basically spent the money and you've got a new engine... which is a good thing (assuming its been rebuilt by someone with a good rep such as API or TEG etc )

Any proof the mileage stated is genuine? sti engines may be prone to failure if bad/incorrect fuel used etc, but 36k does seem a bit premature to say the least.

Its from a garage with a very good reputation (mainly deal with Subaru and Evo's). All there cars are totally mint. I would say the mileage is genuine due to that fact and the condition of the car. Would you say it is priced a little high then?

I have also found another one. A 1997 With 58k on the clock, condition is totally mint. Its priced at 8250 (private)? Is that a better buy? Or are these cars a nightmare with high mileage? I curently drive a BMW which run forever (250,000 Miles) if looked after. What sort of mileage would you get out of one of these?

Oh and how much do services cost?

Thanks

Def a little on the pricey side, presumably its a V4? Do they have a website?

Servicing cost vary depending on where you take it, for an interim service you're prob looking anywhere from £110 - £150 (+VAT).

I dont see why a car thats properly looked after should be a major problem, with 58K on the clock, but you're never gonna get 250k miles out of one without replacing major components no matter how you look after it!

Have you looked in the For Sale section on here?

The servicing is a lot cheaper than the Beemer then Last one cost me £400!!!! Do you know anywhere in North Wales/Chester area for servicing. I would assume then over 100k mileage is a dangerous area then?

Oh I assume the petrol consumption is cr@p? Thats to be expected though as with my BMW. What mpg do most people get?

Yeah, but your £400 service wasnt just for an oil and filter was it?

The big one on the scoob with cam belt etc can cost upto £5-700 (iirc) depending on where you take it!

MPG, on a motorway cruise, 80ish (off boost) maybe get 260 - 280 out of a full tank (I usually put about 50-55 litres in), on track... half that.

Yeah was what they call an Inspection II which is a big one.

What are the service level intervals? Like BMW's tend to work in the below order.

7,500 - Oil Service
15,000 - Inspection I
22,500 - Oil Service
30,000 - Inspection II

Do scooby's have simialr intervals and service levels and there costs at Specialists?

From looking at prices on Pistonheads & on here (that have actually sold) Id say £10K for a V6, £9K for a V5, £8K for a V4 as ball park figures

As I mentioned, every 6000 miles or 6 months whichever comes first. So yes, its similar to the BMW in that respect.

I wouldnt bother taking an import to a Subaru dealer. I prefer to take mine to a specialist. I use TEG Sport in Lancashire, they specialise in Subaru Group N rally cars.
