All other issues aside (and without intentionally scaremongering) be careful when posting stories of your illegal exploits. BBS users are simply and legally traced.

I disagree, its little more than hearsay and easily dismissed as bravado: the anonymous nature of the internet only adds to the credibility of this as a defence. Wherever people have been foolish to boast about their dishonesty/stupidity on BBSs such as this: theyve been prosecuted after confessing during an interview.

so say i managed 210 in my impreza would that be enough evidence to prosecute me.. I don't think so. There needs to be a rather large factor called evidence! it needs to be established that beyond resonable doubt that it actually happended and im afraid that won't happen from any posts that have been written! (obviously my car can't do 210!! and any comments expressed are purely my opinion and may be of a factual basis but also may be of an enirely un-factual basis)

Hearsay is a different thing altogether and is "information" that has come through a 3rd party. Anything you write on this board could be a confession, to the other users, under PACE. Whether it could be dismissed or not would be a decision for the CPS and the courts and, as you say, would probably depend upon other evidence. An additional confession would be useful to have but I don't believe it would be necessary and it would be interesting to see the position of other users of the forum if PACE were to be applied to a confession made on here.

Being a cop is such a stressful job these days, you've just got your 3rd donut and coffee of the day when you surf over to SN and spot a possible post admitting to a crime. It's all go from then on as you track down the evil menace to society and bring them to justice. You need ***** of steel and to be a real man to do a job like that, why I remember the time when... etc. etc.

so if the plod do read this site then they would know the crap my bf just went through with his car? well if that was the case, wouldn't they then do something about it? or would we have to report it to them?

There was a guy in Hull bragging off about how he could afford a new BMW - hinting that he was a drug dealer.
It was read by Plod and they used the website material to get a warranty and turned up at his house for a dawn raid and he got banged up. No confession required. The story was well covered in the press and on national news. (The website was Friends Reunited). Cue conspiracy theorists on how this was a media conspiracy between the Government, Police and Media to scare BBS users
It can happen - although speeding is clearly harder to corroborate. What is not is someone describing all their mods, getting caught up in a fatacc and then trying to prove their car is road legal - which it may well not be - for example.

Just to be clear, 99% of the time these incidents where people have had their comments off forums used in court have been discovered by chance and then flagged up to the relevant force etc, not as routine. Obviously there are certain forums / areas of the net where the BiB do have dedicated staff to monitor and gather evidence - which is fair enough.
However, its worth remembering that everything you say online can often be traced back and you could be held accountable.
Now, on a more relevant note, IM read these forums as a matter of routine...
