Question Clutch judder.......

Sorry to ask this as im sure its been asked before but here goes....

sometimes when I first drive my car (my51 wrx) the clutch judders when I pull away in 1st
it doesnt happen all the time.....Any ideas?????

Only had the car two weeks so still getting used to it but i presume its not supposed to do this.

Mine started doing this recently (MY01 WRX), try giving it a few "big" starts from standstill, it solved mine. It still does it occasionally but it's a common problem with the clutches so unless you're in the mood to shell out for a new one, you'll have to put up with it.

It probably goes away after the first couple of gear changes?

Frequent, common problem with standard clutches. Does it when the car is cold doesn't it?

The easy way to get rid of it is to do a couple of full-bore launches. Set revs to 5000rpm-5500rpm, and come off the clutch quickly. I found this cleaning procedure worked wonders. Repeat the procedure when the judder starts again (probably not for quite a while).

My 02 WRX does it too - only when cold pulling & away for the first time.

Not worth worrying about IMHO.

The 'Big' start does work

And as mine has done nearly 60K on the original clutch the occasional 'big' start doesn't seem to be a problem.

My 01 WRX is exactly as described above. A good quick start from standstill does sort it out for a while.
Only happens when cold and only now and again.
Don't worry about it.

Same here (03sti). The big start proceedure works wonders, it's supposed to clean the clutch surface. A mate with a porker 964 uses the same method.

Have had 3 imprezas and all have suffered a bit from clutch judder (although it is much less noticable in my present sti). Usually happens first thing in the morning for a few minutes and then completely disappears (cold damp clutch surface?).

I had two new clutches under warranty, the third - about 20,000 miles ago has been fine. MY01.

full bore launches does'nt seem like a good idea on a cold engine now does it?

i agree . my51 wrx does this when cold as well but only in 1st gear and until the car has warmed up a little. i think i'd rather deal with it than shell out for a clutch upgrade

To save the engine from damage just drive at about 50 mph put it in 3rd, accelarate and ride the clutch for a couple of seconds. Do this a few times and it should cure it for a while. If it doesn't cure it then you may need a new clutch. I had to have mine changed on my old MY00 about six or seven times under warrenty!!! Subaru knew there was a problem and changed the compound of the clutch plate, supposedly

This isn't what people are saying. You let the car warm up as normal, stop somewhere safe and do a couple of full bore launches which 'cleans' the clutch surfaces. You don't need to do this every time from start up; just the once, maybe repeating the process when/if it begins to judder again. It works.

Precisely, wwe're not saying "start her up first thing on a cold morning, put her in 1st and then dump the clutch at 6k rpm's"!!!!

That would be stupid.

If you find it's doing it in the mornings a few days running, wait until she's properly warmed up and then give it some pulling out of a junction, or wherever. That should sort it for a few weeks at least 9does with mine, anyway).

I've had the same problem with my UK MY00 T2000 classic. Got engine etc nicely warmed up and done a few quick starts from about 5-6000rpm to try and sort it. Ended up with lots of revs, not moving very quick and a lot of smoke so not done this since. What is it most likely the smoke was due to, a slipping clutch or is it possible to spin up the tyres with lots of revs on a dry road. Never had this happen when I had an Audi Coupe Quattro so confused.
