Default checking the headgasket has gone yourself

Now as we al know, when the oil part of the gasket leaks/breaks it contaminates the water side as you get the good old imulisified water in the expansion tank, but, some times it may not be present etc or not leaking much, so you use these...

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Cooling-System...QQcmdZViewItem

but imprezas dont have the normal expansion tanks do they, with the threaded part of the expansion tank, just that pop lid, rite, so these are no good ??

so what is ??

also, i have seen a device that you suck up the fluid in the expansion tank/rad and if exhaust gas is present, the other part of the gasket that can aslo go ! it changes colour, anyone seen these about ??

cheers.........

If you can see bubbles coming into the expansion tank when revved (with the Cap off and system correctly bled up) that can be a sign of a compression leak into the cooling system, this can be confirmed with an Exhaust Gas Tester. I have never used this "Litmus Paper" type device that you mention...

its kinda hard to see the bubbles in the expansion tank when ur revving IT lol !! AND SOMETIMES THERES NOT MUCH Fluid in the expansion tank,.oops, caps, so u cant see it bubling.

cheers..

with mine i thought the thermostat wasnt doing its job as there was back pressure forcing water out of the yellow over flowy thing, i havnt got any imulsified oil an i hav no power loss....................it was only till i got it pressure tested to day it confirmed the water was carbonated within the system much to my dismay as the car runs ok to the untrained eye

also, what did the test result show, no pressure building up due to it leaking through the exhaust gaps in gasket ??
i take it you were losing water too, as the exhasut would of been burning it up if it were this side leaking !?!?!?

thats what threw me on my astra it was pumping out of the manifold when the gasket went ........but on the scoob it was coming out of the yellow cap only on that side throught the overflow so we all thought back pressure due to the thermostat not working we thought this as there was no manky deposits in the oil and there was no power loss

im now stuck with a car i once love trying to justify paying almost a grand to fix a 11 year old car

my sweetie i can honestly say i know how you feel. after five days of buying our wrx we too discovered that the head gasket had gone. took it back to the dealer who then took the **** and we didn't get the car back for 2 weeks!!!!
its a pain i know but make sure you take it to a reputable specialist to get it sorted and not a dodgy backstreet dealer like my bf!!!

Any garage with a gas analyser ie. all MOT stations and many others can check for exhaust gas in the coolant and this is a sure fire way of determining a head gasket leaking in to the coolant.
Just hold the probe above the header tank neck with the cap removed and check for the presence of HC.

It could be referring to the flat four engine of the scoob, where the drive shaft is in the middle and the pistons are arranged at 90 degrees to it, two on each side. This configuration needs two cylinder heads, unlike an inline four piston engine where you only need one cylinder head.

They don't need to know about gearboxes, only the orientation of pistons.

Gawd, this is confusing. I'm glad I've a 4-cylinder inline engine. With 20 valves.I think. So do I have a 4 cylinder, 5 valves per head engine. Or a 5 cylinder, 4 valves per head engine..............I'm off to bed
