Default Tapping noise from engine.......?

Oh dear....My Scoob doesn't sound too good.
Put my foot down in 5th gear and the thing suddenly was "spluttering" badly. No Knocklink activity and boost seems to be ok....i drove it home carefully, occassionally accelerating hard and getting the same "spluttering".
Parked up in my yard i could hear tapping coming from the engine. Having looked at the engine bay, it sounds as though it's coming from an area on the drivers side just in front of the turbo .
Car is a Classic Uk turbo MY2000 with 58k miles with a few sensible mods. Remap tek3 and filter.
Any ideas of what the problem might be?

Checked the oil level and it's spot on. The tapping does appear to be coming from the area of the spark plugs on the drivers side. Will get a garage to take a look at it tomorrow....although i guess it's probably best to let them come and take a look rather then drive it to them and risk anymore damage.
I had just filled up with Tesco99 some 10 miles earlier...hope it has nothing to do with that.

Contaminated/knackered boost solenoid maybe?

Have a word with David at API mate.

Best of luck

Thanks.....interesting. Just did a search and found an interesting post with answers from David at API.
It does sound similar to the problem on my MY00 except that i have a very distinct "tapping" coming from that area of the engine.
Could a faulty or contaminated Solenoid also cause "tapping"?

I'm not sure mate, they can make a bit of a row, even when working correctly and it tends to be a tapping/ticking sound. When they're on the blink/contaminated, the car won't accelerate properly and contamination is quite common in the late classics, usually caused by overfilling with oil I believe. The solenoid is also located on the drivers side of the engine bay IIRC.

I'm nothing like an expert -as you can probably tell from the above!!! But You shouldn't assume the worst just yet. It seems hard to believe that you've suffered a terminal engine failure with no warning from the KL, no gastly banging sounds, no smoke, no fluids spat everywhere, and that it's still making the right boost -if not accelerating properly.

Like I said, give David at API a ring on monday, he'll mostl likely be able to tell you the likely candidates there and then!

All the best with it, fingers crossed for you!!!

Thanks New Scooby,
It appears that the problem is the solenoid and indeed this does make a tapping/clicking noise if faulty or contaminated.
