Default MD321 v APS SR55

Having placed numerous adverts in the wanted section for a replacement turbo, its now looking like I'll be having to buy "new".

I have shortlisted it to either the MD321 or an APS SR55.

Some spec on my 2001 Impreza:
2.5 Conversion
Wiseco pistons
Graham Goode Precision con rods
APS front mount
RCM 80mm Induction kit
RCM twin-plate with 5.2kg billet flywheel
6 Speed STi box
750cc (or 740??) Injectors

So what turbo shall I buy? and why? The car is currently undergoing a rebuild and the company carrying out the work have suggested the MD321.

Just looking for a second opinion.

Contact Andy who builds/deals with turbo's and mapping. Friendly and very knowledgeable. He'll be able to tell you the turbo you need for your spec:

PM'd him a while ago but he didn't reply. Perhaps he'll reply to this thread?

Thanks all the same.

Have had both. The sr55 lasted only 1400 miles (about £1 a mile) before cracking the exhaust housing. Have the md321 on now down on power from the APS (25bhp) as were running 401/400 now 376/401 so gained 1lb torque. I have been told its down to mapping. Time will tell as being remapped by a third party(Pat) in the next couple of weeks. Engine similar spec to yours. Hope this helps.

Bad news on the APS. Was it not covered under warranty or was it bought second hand?

I think the best way to get in touch with Andy would be to phone him mate. Probably get a better chat on the phone than on here/email anyway...

Everything you buy should be fit for its purpose.

Take it up with wherever you purchased it from.

the MD321 is a very flexible turbo and capable of massive torque, good for 450/450

Probably out doing a mapping. Send an email, they're usually answered in the evenings.

Oh I'm sure I won't.

I was just struggling to say yes as I also have a £5k bill coming in for my rebuild. But then I figured, why waste a £5k rebuild with a lame turbo (VF34)?

Thats just a waste of £5k!!

What is it they say? You have to speculate to accumulate!!

How does the MD321T compare with a GT30R 0.63AR rotated mount for spool up and power?

Just thinking that my rotated GT30R 0.82AR spooled to a bar of boost at 3000 RPM on a 2.5 and is a 520 BHP capable turbo - I would give it serious consideration on a built 2.5.

Surely you'll get a better power band out of something in its proper turbine housing rather than a P20 IHI?
