Why would key come out of ignition when engine running ?
At my works, this guy has a red impreza,so we were chatting and he mentioned his key can be pulled out of the barrel when his engine is running, what would cause that ?
he said his steering lock works fine etc and you have to push the key in to turn it off etc so all seems well but wondered for him what caused this ?

You'll probably find the key to your impreza will start it too (or anyone elses at that)

Like most imports it happened when it was stolen in Japan and imported here.
The steering lock pin was replaced, but the barrel wasn't due to cost and the fact that a new ignition barrel would alert the wary!!
IMHO

At least have a clue of what your on about before trolling for bites, Pete.
Hey Rig: Tell him it's a UK car. The barrels are only brass. Brass vs. Chromium plated key. Chrome wins hand down. Thus worn barrel pegs.
A new ignition barrel would fix this, so if it was actually stolen and fitted with a new barrel, it wouldn't do it!
2nd things that rule it out as stolen. Nearly ALL cars that have been stolen without the key have the barrel intact, undamaged and left in perfect order...why? Because they remove the elctrical switch off the back. and start it using that.
What gets damaged is the peg that engages the steering lock gets sheered off when it is forced. This is a seperate mechanism to the barrel. Seeing that Rig says the steering lock works perfectly fine would suggest that the locking peg is undamaged.

Oh diddums, can't poor little Peter read it porperly???
Surely as a nuclear engineer you have the ability to extrapolate the correct letter that needs to be removed in order for it to read correctly.
Or do you still need me to edit it for you

I'd of thought that being able to remove a key while the engine is running is pretty dam dangerous and I'm surprised his first stop wasn't his local garage for a new barrel/key?
But what do I know, he probably showed all his Chavy mates, went down Halfrauds and bought some Chavy stick on ****e and then went down Maccy D's........ probably still not fixed
