Default Why move oil filter to here ?

Bottom left of pic, wil be changing filter today and thought, why put it here, the original place has the 2 pipes connected to it, with like an adapter plate, then it runs up to where you can see it, it has a sensor, think for the gauge i have, would that be the only reason, so the gauge could be wired in ?

or is it for say, on the track the oil filter cant be knocked off, dunno, any ideas ???

i can see it now, when i undo it, oil runs down the inner wing everywhere LOL !!

cheers.......

Usually a remote filter like that is accompanied by an oil cooler radiator?

Makes no sense to just move the oil filter on it's own

I'm guessing that it is less vulnerable on the rally stages??

Why don't you take the car to one of the many so-called Subaru specialists out there?... tell them about all of your woes and worries and ask them to sort it out. 'cos it seems to me like you've found yourself a right nail there some how!

Oh no, disaster!!

How on earth can you correctly do the **** oil change procedure now?

You now need a car body jig to turn the car upside down so the oil won't run out the filter when you try screwing it back on

Ignore them all, just take it straight to Halfrauds, buy some Chavy stick-on accessories and 'bobs-your-fathers-brother'

I did hear a story from the paranoid that the oil filter in its original location was susceptible to heat soak from the exhaust headers, causing higher oil temperatures.

Some speculate that this is why the later oil filter designs are smaller in size, so it is not as close to the headers

So maybe a previous owner reading such stories became paranoid and decide to move the filter location.

I say the "storys" are a load of codswallop, more likely Subaru changed the OEM supplier, who used a smaller canister for cost/interchangability reasons.

The only reason I can think of is to keep it out of the way for rallying. But then if it was that much of worry, you'd fit a proper sump guard instead. Perhaps it was originally an oil cooler extension but then was changed to a filter mounting plate, for quick changes or something? It would be easier to change the filter where it is there, rather than the original position. That's all I can think of and even that sounds pretty silly.

Other nutty explaination would be it was moved so that it could be changed without removing the undertray

Although you'd need to remove the undertray to clean off the puddle of oil your left with after removing it, otherwise it's smoke city

It sounds to me as if The Rig has bought the best motor he could within his limited budget and he's desperately trying to return it to as near to standard as he can in order to stave off any reliability issues. I agree that we all got a bit fed up with the kinds of cars he was asking our advice on, but now he's found one I think we ought to give the bloke a break.

Besides, it's not his fault that all you wallies can't stop tw*tting about with your vehicles, is it?

I always thought the small funnel shaped thing on the left of the intercooler in the pic was an oil cooler, can't see any other reason for it to be there and it is a very popular mod on JDM cars, which this looks like.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
Dan.

The black funnel shaped thing on the left of your intercoolerwith a yellow filler cap between is your oil cooler I think. On the picture up the top I think the bright silver thing your looking at is the dump valve.

That black funnel thing in between the brake fluid reservior and the intercooler is just a heat sheild and duct to the turbo, nothing more.

Yup - what he said. It just ducts some of the air from one side of the bonnet scoop down and over the turbo, either to cool it or just to push hot air down and away from the intercooler. Mainly fitted on older JDM cars.
