White Impreza ABLAZE !!! Junction 49, A1(m)
Was driving down the A1 this morning when I approach the Boroughbridge / Harrogate turn off when traffic starts to slow down - looked ahead and saw a white X Reg Impreza on the hard sholder on fire !!!
Flames coming out of the bonnet - no salvaging that !
Saw the fellas a good distance from the car on grass verge - glad you got out and to safety ok
Anyone on here ?

Surely the CockLink gave a warning, shut the fuel, sparyed foam, called the Fire Brigade, brought the car safely to a stop on the hard shoulder, opened the doors and escorted the passengers safely away??
Glad everyone was OK!

Poor *******!
I carry a fire extinguisher in all of my cars, but you've still got to have the speed of thought to get out and use it.. My old LC was sold with two fire extinguishers but I still have no idea why the new owner let it burn when it suffered an engine fire due to a dodgey bit of wiring after he had a new engine fitted.

They do seem rather prone to it - I personally know two people with Imprezas who have suffered engine fires. The design of the engine is such that any oil leak has a good chance of dripping onto the hot exhaust, and it can be a pig to reach even if you do have a fire extinguisher to hand.

Shame
Fire extinguishers are useless these days unfortunately due to the bloody tree huggers.
I have a Lifeline system plumbed into the 205 - if it went up in flames, the Lifeline just gives me time to get out the car, but it wouldn't stop the fire as the AFFF foam is crap.
The old Halon gas was much much better, but the stilly environmetalists got it banned - "have to save the ozone" was the shout!! What's better - a bit of halon every now and then or a burning car

If it was that prone to fire it would not have won so many awards and customer satisfaction surveys.

It's happened to me personally, in my old UK turbo. Oil from a failed seal dripped onto the exhaust manifold and started smoking, and I had to be towed to a garage.
Of course, if anyone is stupid enough to read "oil leaks in a flat four engine are more likely to result in fires than in other engines" as "Subaru engine fires are common" then that's their problem, not mine.

There was a nice new A4 Avant completely burnt out on the M50 nr the Hereford junction on Tuesday. So, new car get it two.
My mate is a fireman and he said that they have templates of danger areas on cars. Exploding Air bags, reactive bumpers, seat belt pre-tensioners, fuel tanks,LPG etc are all a big risk to the crews
They have to attend all car fires now because of the possibility of bodies in them too!
