no i dont have a timer!
Iginition could be a problem. I recently had trouble starting the car like 2 or 3 times in the 5 months that I have had it, the car almost wouldnt start. I assumed it may be the dreaded newage flat battery syndrome but car got checked at dealers and they orderd a new battery for me. The battery is due to be fitted on the 21st but im thinking its the ignition not the battery now.

Pre ignition mate!!!!! The carbon on the pistons glows and ignites the petrol!!! Very serious fault!! Sounds like the timing is well out (to advanced) or it's ready for the heads off and a good de-coke in order.

Different to the days when cars had carberettas and you could carry on drawing in fuel even with the ignition off.
Sounds like an electrical fault to me, start with the ignition switch.

If its old school running on, then it will surge, die, surge , die and generally rattle about.
Bet the ignition barrel shaft is worn where it enters the actual ignition part (ie the bit with the electrical contacts) or the screws which screw the plastic bit onto the lock barrel are loose allowing it to jump positions.
Get it sorted as it will only get worse, and you will probably either not be able to start it, or stop it.

If it was doing this, YOU'D KNOW by the noise it made. It would sound like a bag of spanners when your turn off the ignition. And it won't happen with Efi as there is no fuel injected when the ignition is off...no fuel = no combustion, unlike carburettored cars.
Suggest ignitio switch is faulty, or there is a turbo timer. I also once happened upon an old Escort that did this, due to a wiring problem it was running off the Alternator...switch on the headlamps and the engine would stop

Your ignition switch is probably fudged.

I rang dealer as i was in a rush and they were just outside the town centre. they wizzed down to help me straight away (thanks Jennings middlesbrough). by this time the car had been stood for 20 mins. they put the keys in and started it first time! (I blushed and looked stupid) But then they turned it off took the keys out and it was still running!!! for once i was happy for this to happen because at least then the mechanics could witness it! neither knew the problem so got it going again and took it to the dealer. I however blitzed to leeds bradford as check in was about to close!!!
I am now back from hols and spoke to dealer who have orderd an ignition barrel. hopefully this will solve it. unfortionatly parts are on back order so i am carless and have spent best part of today chasing IM to get me a hire car!
right, going back to bed.

I got a hire car at 19/20 mate... dont let them fob you off with that.
All that happened was that I had to prove I was insured, accept a higher excess and take a smaller class of vehicle from the rental company. I can give you my cars registration at the time, dealership and work carried out if you need it to confirm it with them to check back history?? Just PM me if you want the info.
Cheers,
Grant

Hope you get it back soon. Why can't the dealer lend you one of their runabouts ?, My dealer gives my a C2 and I insure it. My insurance company covers it for free (as its a much lower risk than my STi).
Eeee, a WRX at under 21. I had a 90bhp astra SR and a 110bhp Manta GTE at that age and though I was lucky

I cut a long story short above.
I was allowed a hire car, I was in fact picked up by the hire car people and took to there office to fill in forms. whilst doing this I was told that I had to be 21 to go on the hire car companys insurance and the only way i could have the car was to insure it on my insurance. I did not really want to do this but agreed. When i rang my insurer to do this they told be i would have to pay nearly £40 for 5 days to do this. I could not believe this as the car i was getting was a toyota corolla and assumed as it was a lesser priced and performance car that they would just say yea no probs. trouble is I would have to pay for it. subaru were paying for the car but i was going to have to pay for insuring it. this made me mad as i payed 2K to insure my scoob and i had already wasted 10 days of it being off the road whilst i was away. If i hadnt been on holiday when the car was in the garage i would have been fuming. anyway with the parts being on back order i may have had to have the hire car for longer than 5 days effectively making me pay to insure it again. I dare say i could have billed subaru for the insurance costs but there was no guarrentee of them paying for it. besides i could not ring them as they shut over the weekend.
As for the dealer giving me a car, they have a 3 week waiting list for courtesy cars. as i hadnt booked the scoob in because it broke and i just left it with them so i could really get one.
I have now put my self as a named driver on my mothers car so i can get about if im desperate but at my cost and only for a week.
10 days insurance for scoob is about £50 + what i payed to go on my mothers, im looking at £70 so far. and i have no fix date so could be much more.
sick as.
p.s: spain was ace.

if the wrx is under warranty write a polite but firm letter to customer services at subaru or subaru dealer to cover costs. if it turns out to be the barrell.especially as its taking so long .
take it higher if the dealer dont respond.
worth a try
