Default How loud is your Exhaust. my Milltek is...

Just had a trip to PowerStation for a tune up.
now has a 3" Milltek exhaust comprising...

straight thru downpipe.
sports CAT and silencer center
backbox with 4" tip.

I am really concerned about the noise (track days/police)
This is suppose to be one of the more quite systems as well!

just measured db tonight.

at 1m, 45deg away from exhaust at idle its 94-96db.
Is this loud ?
Is this whats meant by a static test ? (or do i need to rev to @4500rpm, becuase this will be well over 100db)

when they check for trackdays you have to check at a certain rpm can't remember what, or some are at driveby.
My Blitz Nur Spec R with decat came back at 110db and it's been on 3 years with no problems at all so i wouldn't worry

im getting a full afterburner vortex system soon (moneys pending) from www.scoobyworld.co.uk comprising of backbox decat centre and downpipe. will that be a noisy beast? also would it be worth buying a "cat centre?" for those pesky m.o.t.'s to keep terence treehugger happy.

http://www.airpowersystems.com.au/us...wrx-hoe-r1.htm

just had a look at a similar exhaust (APS 3" with 4"tip) . reading the link says that this at 4500rpm only produces 93db with CAT.

I think I will call Powerstation up on Monday.

Wink

Static tests normally done at 4/5Krpm

We testing 10 cars near my home before Bedford Autodrome

6 would pass static tests but only 2 would pass driveby test
1 car failed Static but would have passed Driveby test

Noise is a strange thing can be effected by weather(Atomospheric cond.) and readings taken at Bedford didn't compare to ours

Because of VVT technology most are turning to a % of full Revs and backed up by Driveby tests

Secondly, and more significantly, your car must comply with our drive-by noise limits. The noise emission from your car must not exceed 87 dB(A) measured 20 metres from your car, which shall be accelerating maximally at over 60 mph.
BTW My Miltek sounds awesome fairly quiet till your giving it some

Powerstation have a directional tail pipe bung for exhausts which will significantly improve trackday noise tests

Noise is a very differcult thing to measure for trackdays. At last years Tuner GP we had problems with Donnington’s on track noise equipment; although we cruised through the static test we would trigger them on full throttle.

We had a customer with a similar problem at Donnington with his Spec C but when he fitted the bung it passed comfortably. Did not feel like it robbed power either

Anyone that has heard our race Type-25 will know how quiet it is but from certain angles it used to trigger the noise metres. Milltek have worked on improving this and their new bung is one of the options we have. We know that the Milltek is one of the most quiet systems (especially 3") on the market as we have test most of the others.

Iain

IIRC My T20(3" MillTek + Sports Cat) measured 96db @4500rpm at Japfest Castle Coombe

Thanks Iain

I will have a chat with Powerstation regarding the bung.

But also want to check that the downpipe fitted definitely had a resonator and was not straight thru.

I know the center had a CAT + resonator, but didnt see any sign of a resonator on the dp when being fitted.

I just cant believe Im putting out 96dB at idle.

Ive got a MY00 with a H&S AB Vortex full de-cat system and in my opinion its very loud, ive been driving another car and let someone overtake me in my car and it sounds like a jet engine, its cracks and pops like gun-fire when you give the throttle a tiny tap. There are louder systems than this thou.

Im getting a Prodrive BB this week, having a break from all the noise! The de-cat downpipe make the turbo spool up swooosh louder, this I like a lot!

I would recommend getting the set up thou, makes every drive a total blast.......literally!

i'm very happy with my milltek system - its pretty quiet when just taking it easy - but makes the car sound like a crazy 1000c motorbike when on full chat

Got AB full decat, but Ninja BB. It is loud. But the howl on full throttle outways the drone. Not sure if you can get a bung for the Vortex BB, but i got one for the Ninja for the motorways, £35.

I'm considering a bung for my Ninja, do you find it any good.

Did you get it from Hayward & Scott?

spoke to Rich at powerstation and it turns out that only the Jap twinscrolls can have a milltek resonated downpipe. My UK STI wont be resonated. Oh no! Noise probably isn't a problem on Jap spec cars plus also has no burble ?

Any others with milltek 3" on a UK machine?

Anyway, Rich at Powerstation will be looking at it again to see if the milltek exhaust needs repacking. Fingers crossed as its just too loud. I hope this and may be the bung will sort things out. My wife will be giving me an ear full if the exhaust dosent make me deaf before.

I'm still getting round to fitting it.

Yeah, got it from H&S £35.

I only bought it for long journeys or for when the wife drives it (which is all the time). But i hoped she would get used to it, and it seems she has!

I was in the same boat as you. You definitely get used to it. (can systems get quieter?). I kept kicking myself for not getting a resonated centre. Try a bung. It's a cheaper option than replacing it.

I have a Full H&S decat on a 2001 WRX, produces 110 Db, with the bung 99 Db, but got pulled from Japfest track session in 2005 for a drive by 107 Db with bung

Most JDM Imprezas up to and including MY'95 cars dont require a catalytic convertor. This depends how theyre registered, but most are down as 'Subaru Saloon' or Subaru Impreza Estate' or similar. If the MOT tester can find exact emissions limits for those un-specified 'models' then he's a better man than me.....

believe it or not gc8 mines 95 wrx is down as a 1994cc 4wd lx. now we all know subaru only made the lx in a 2wd 1.6l engine... how would i far when it comes to mr mot tester? if i had a full decat system.
