Thumbs up

The race was conducted at RAF Wittering as part of their families day.

Story and pics here and here.

The Harrier is not crap - it's currently in active use in Afganistan, and is still the only servicable jet in the world that is capable of short take off and vertical landing. It will be in service with at least 5 countries for another 10 years yet

OK Matie . .But you also seem to be forgetting the YAK41, which has more capable characteristics than the Harrier . . .And yes . . The five countries in question will no doubt have military overstretched budgets - and therefore cant buy anything newer/more capable . .

Been done several times before, recall a Honda and Ferrari doing similiar results are always the same. The jet just nudges it. Your grannies car can get off the line quicker than a fighter jet.

Run it over the full length of RAF Fairford (11,000ft) and the would be stuffed by a mile

....two of those countries being the UK and US. Nothing will be able to match it's versitility until the STOL version of the Joint Strike Fighter comes into service. It may be 1950s/1960s technology behind the concept of the Harrier, but there's life in it yet!

Cracking vid Clarkie172, the R10 does seem pretty quick off the line!

The original harrier maybe older technology as it first flew in 1967 but the gr7s which are based at wittering first flew in 1990 and only resemble the original in name. Pretty much everything has been changed including the airframe and engine and avionics. The gr9 is an even newer package with improved avionics and weapons over the 7. So they are not exactly an outdated piece of crap. I think you will find that the only countries that CAN afford the latest version is the uk and the us.

Anyway as has been said before its been done loads of times(tornados, f16s, jaguars, harriers) and the result is always the same. The car pulls away first but as soon as the jet is moving and getting air into the intakes, its power increases and its bye bye car.

Edited to say still very impressive car though.
