Dropped laptop
and it's now FUBAR'd so insurance are going to (hopefully) right it off as unrepairable. So where do I stand with regards to them supplying a replacement (via co called 'I-Val'), when, what I would like to do is pick one myself..?
Can they insist on supplying or can I get a payment from them to get my own..?
Also I presume they'll try and match the spec rather than go by original price..? (<3yr old Dell Inspiron 8500 with upgrades cost £1255..!). Similar spec seems to be around £800 at the moment. Would like the £1200 one though..!

Going through the same myself, rang insurance yesterday and a company called powerplay are collecting the laptop tomorrow. the said they would decide if it was fubar
or not. if it was they would issue a replacement. So it looks to me they decide what they give you.![Nono](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/nono.gif)

Doubt they'll give you the money, more a value to select from their supplier. Mine was EmpireCommercial (/Direct).com i think.

When the kids spilt Coke in the laptop I rang the insurance company and told them what happened. Got the PC from PC World and within 2 days I had a cheque from them (made payable to PC World) and we could get any one we wanted.
Anyway new insurance company 4 years later and my laptop has now got broke again thanks to the kids and I have to have it collected and assessed to see if it is fubared or not. Not sure what happens after that.

From an insurance bloke (moi !), they can insist on replacement, but if you request it they'll normally be prepared to make a payment based on your own replacement receipt (ie they'll contribute the amount they have assessed your old computer as being worth once they have the receipt).
Or, they may be prepared to issue a cheque payable to the supplier of your choice up to the value they have assessed.
hope this helps ma man,
Andy
