Basic Turbo or VR6
I know that this is going to end you quite bias but if you had £5k to spend would you go for a Golf VR6 or a basic Impreza Turbo?
What are the pros and cons of each car?

Really? I thought that it would be pretty evenly matched.
Would the Impreza be faster in both a straight line and in the bends? Is a VR6 4wd as well? I'm pretty sure it is

The VR6 is about 180 bhp isn't it? Compared to 208-215 bhp in the scoob? The VR6 isn't 4-motion generally, I don't think. I remember speaking to a Golf aficionado a few years ago and he said that the VR6 was one of the worst-handling golfs.

A mate of mine has a VW Corrado VR6 which is fwd. A while ago gave him the chance to drive my Impreza (Turbo 2000 UK model 2000 reg and standard) on wet roads. His thoughts were that it was in a different class to his VW as the Impreza has so much more power and the car handles it better as it's 4wd. Also the traction through corners is amazing he said and feels like it's super glued to the road. I've heard that the UK Sti's are even better through the corners but they will be way more than your 5K budget.

On my second Impreza now, had a 95 WRX (270ish bhp) and now a MY00 Uk Turbo (273bhp).
No contest - miles better, faster, better handling etc etc.
Oh btw my newest Impreza cost £5k.
And a 1.8 Turbo Gti or VR6 will be a lot heavier, IMO about the same as my Leon Cupra (about 1400kg), whereas a classic is about 1250kg.

Just been on track today and there was an M3and VR6 were there and when they had there foot down they sounded like a bag of spanners compared to a scoob! I was very disappointed in the way they sounded, The V8 Westfield type thing was another matter

Forget the Golf VR6, get the Corrado VR6 (192bhp rather than 170 for the golf. its a 2.9 rather than a 2.8 although almost the same engine). OK the scoob has more grip, traction and a few more horses but the Corrado has far better handling. Depends on what you want from the car though, most people apart from 'us enthusiasts' don't necessarily appreciate quality handling, most like grip and traction and how fast car X can go round a corner and whether it can best car Y from the lights.
Incidentally, there's was practically nothing between the C VR6 and my mates 260bhp MK1 wrx or sti whatever it was, performance wise. Scoob quicker, just, up to 60/70 and the Corrado faster, slightly, above that. The VR6 was certainly faster above 130!! (private road officer but that's an irrelevance for most driving.
Anyway, don't look at figures, on paper etc. they tell you very little, go drive both cars if you can and make your own mind up about what's best for you..

Was behind a golf GTi he other day and he saw me in his mirror and hammered through the gears, nearly crashed on a roundabout doing at least 50.

i had a VR6 golf, and while it was good (sounds awesome on wot with an exhaust) it wasn't as fast as my std UK scoob and handled **** in comparison, no question! the problem is the engine is too heavy and it sit right on the front wheels, you can sort it but yopur then talking aftermarket suspension etc etc, brakes were **** as well, but having said all that, i liked it a lot and would have another (but not at the expense of "not having a scoob") if you see what i mean

imprezza all day, you can get a syncrovr6 which was never built for our roads and so is allways left hand drive mpg is probably the same without the grin factor and suffers the same as the imprezza if not maintained to a higher standard but worse and as expensive.

I think that I'll make my GTI 6 the last hatchback car for me. I can't believe the weights there. I thought that it would be totally the other way around.

You should be able to get a decent '95 WRX import for around £4K. Standard car had 260 PS (around 256 bhp, I think), up-rated suspension, air-con and a rear wash wipe... which is a God send in the UK. Smiles/£ ratio makes the scoob a winner every time. Just get a black one... It's the quickest colour!
Heck, Mr Lewis has posted something I agree with. Better put the tartan rug and panama hat on the parcel shelf!

I drive a Golf MK3 VR6 and a MY 97 Sti 3 wagon. IMHO the Golf is just as reliable than a scoob (if not more) and has better build quality. The VR6 is more relaxing to drive, has more usable torque round town (less gear changing) but ultimately is not as quick and does not grip/ handle as well as the scoob. As for engine sound, they are completly different, the golf is a refined? unstressed V6 whereas the scoob is a tuned turbocharged 4 pot.
To summarise, the golf was a quick car 10 years ago, but it really isn't any more, the scoob is still quick and grippy.

The mk3 golf was never a good car, even in VR6 guise, its somewhat dated (even then) 12 valve engine isnt the best (all 170bhp's worth), though if you do want one the Corrado is the one to get.
VW quality doesnt come into it (vw's dont have quality, its a bit of a myth) they look good but are as reliable as a..... dare i say it, citroen (which aint very reliable at all).
Performance wise, the scoob has more torque and more bhp, the golf is well, just a golf really, nothing special, the corrado on the other hand would be more of a match for a scoob and is now a rare car (especially in storm guise) so really its down to what you want (you need to have a look on a vw forum about the problems the corrado's suffer from, esp the vr6 cars).

A corrado VR6 weighs 1237KGs vs the Turbo 2000's 1235KGs.
Corrado has 190bhp, 0-60 in 6.8, 0-100 in 18.09
Turbo 2000 has 215bhp, 0-60 in 5.6 and 0-100 in 15.87
A nice appreciable difference especially as the scoob is cheaper to insure (yes I had a corrado VR6) and much easier to modify....my turbo 2000 gets to 100 in just under 10secs with bolt on mods. Depends what exactly you are looking for in a car as they are like chalk and cheese really!
