I think he did actually say the car felt strange towards the end of the stage.
They are also useful when the car is jumping with all four wheels off the deck as it keeps the car fairly flat as it travels through the air.
I can remember Petter doing a large jump minus rear wing and he had a really heavy front end landing resulting in rad damage.
On road going cars its debatable whilst driven by joe average.

They will/do provide downforce at high speed, but it won't make a nose heavy car jump flat.
