I have the new Graphical Data monitor installed in my STI, it a great piece of kit and you can tailor the display to show the info you want it can display upto 8 items per page and has 5 display pages. The display is easy to read and you can set alarms for overboost, high oil temp, low oil pressure.
Check out PSI3's website for more info, or speak to Simon he's a great bloke and extremely helpful.

I bought gauges originally but never got round to fitting them due to needing to fit a sandwich plate, run cables/wires and fit a pillar or centre pod. That was all a bit too much for me so they gathered dust in my bedroom until I sold them!!
I bought a PSI3 Data Monitor instead and it's much better IMO. As previously said, 5 pages of data, alarm thresholds for oil, boost, battery, etc. Plus the ability to read current and historical fault codes and reset the ECU. Plus you can change the I/C spray (apparently) if you have one.
Oh, and it tells the time.
You hit the nail on the head in your original question: Gauges look better (as long as they're quality ones, not a Halfords Corsa Special!! ) but the data monitor is much more useful and better value.
