Unhappy Turbo Splutters at 4k Revs

I am new in the Subaru world, I have recently bought a 1999 Imprezza Turbo which is totally standard.

When I accelerate hard, and the revs get to about 4k, the car seems to splutter and cough til about 5-5.5k revs then all is ok.....has anyone got any ideas.....of what this could be.....

Many thanks

2 things spring to mind

i am fairly new myself and also with an MY99 scoob

i had similar problem and changed 2 things

the main culprit could be the MAF sensor - have you got an induction kit - if so put it back to standard

Changed my MAF and cured problem

But on a side note i put an aftermarket stereo in mine and then it didnt seam to idel as smoothly, put original back in problem solved, i know 2 other scoob owners that have had similar probs too, maybe the alternator is a weak point.

But i susspect MAF.

A failing MAF is the likely culprit. It is critical that you drive the car off boost till you get this confirmed and rectified. If it is the Maf, giving the car stick can kill your engine through detonation. Any Subaru specialist will be able to tell you in a few mins and they're about £80-100 to replace. It's a known weak spot on the MY99/00

Thanks for all your help....... I can confirm it was the MAF sensor causing all the problems. I got this replaced for abt £85.00 fitted....car is back to normal now.
