Default Spectator killed at Santa Pod

Just heard on Radio 2 that a spectator died at the Pod yesterday after being hit by debris from a car.

Not good.

Not good at all. There is no real protection for spectators at pod, or indeed any drag strip i have been on.

Sad day. I never understood how anyone could crash on a strip. But having seen a few I have to say protection is required, this just proves it.

Don't think it was a crash, apparently something flew off one of the cars when it deployed its parachute

Watch out for the health and safety killjoys to come wading in. It would give them the perfect excuse to ban spectators from this kind of event (or at least keep them so far away that binoculars would be needed to see what was going on)

Such a spectator ban would hit hillclimbs too, it is no different BUT on all motorsport tickets clearly stated is 'Motorsport is dangerous'.

The spectator enters at their own risk.

you ARE responsible for your own actions!

Blair's nanny statesmen will indeed love this one.

Guess this is the first time for this situation at the pod, and I first went in 1970, so good record of safety?

Graham

It's a shame when this happens. But as said previously it is clearly stated that motorsport is dangerous. Yes fencing could be put up to protect the crowd. But has been shown at incidents in other sports in an emergency these fences can be very dangerous. Only after a full investigation can a solution be found. On the news write up it says this happened when the parachute was opened, How many parachute openings have taken place at Santa Pod without incident?
