Default popped a piston at 6k revs! GUTTED

since buying my scoob the turbo up pipe has always blown..well i got it replaced the other day and wow what a difference it made!!..i was getting seriously pinned to my seat when the turbo kicked in compared to before!!!
i had it done for 2 days then after abit of hard driving (never over 6k revs)
i get a big cloud of smoke behind me and it started to missfire...
took it to a garage today and theres a hole in the top of one of the pistons
got told to buy a new engine rather than get it fixed..
i have since bought engine for £900 and its gonna be £500 to have it fitted with new cambelt etc
wow what a day ..
i will think twice before giving the new engine some stick even though i always thought imprezas could take it!

1400 seems cheap for the work involved. Hope the other engine is a good one and the fitter knows what he's doing or you're fooked.

If its an import, do you run it on optimax/vpower with octane booster?

Get yourself a knocklink. Ignore what the trolls on here say about them as they can be an engine saver on imported Sti's.

Basically a microphone fitted to your engine block that monitors for the sound of detonation, it provides a visual display in the cockpit via a series of lights; green for background noise, amber for caution and red for detonation detected. If all is well you should never see more than greens.

would probably have saved your engine

you get a knock sensor attached to the engine block which is connected to a box with leds, the leds represent different stages of knock, the sensor listens for det which occurs at a certain freq. when det is detected the leds will light up and you then have to back off power thus saving your engine

As already said JDM's 100ron but SU can be only 97ron

1) Use good Fuel + Octane booster when giving it some if a V5 or newer Remap it

2) Knock link can give warning of impending doom

3) try not to hold on motorways a contant trottle possition eg. 6.5Krpm for 15 miles, modulate the throttle

Was it No.3 Piston by any chance (closest to bulkhead on drivers side)

I could have had a dip fuel pressure during a period of high usage. No 3 is last in a Series Fuel line, so could have been running much weaker than the rest due to Pressure Drop!! Have the Fuel Pump & Fuel pump regulator checked out/replaced as a precaution

IMHO

Get a parallel fuel modification done when you get the engine repaired, it will help against this failing again or have it remapped for uk ron fuel
