Some of the favourites seem to be:

Toyo Proxes T1-S
Toyo Proxes T1-R
Yoko Parada 2's
Michelin Pilot Sport 2's

If you use the search function, there will be plenty of threads with opinions on tyres. There was a poll done as well for tyre makes.

I change all 4 at once but rotate the front / rears every few thousdand to get even wear.

Toyo T1-R are what I use - very good for the price.

Michelin Pilot Sport 2's

You can just change 2 tyres no problem. However, these need to be changed on the same Axle, i.e. 2 Fronts, or 2 rears. Never only front left and rear left etc.

It is true that a car will perform better at it's limits if all for tyres are the same, and say having Michelin's on the front and Pirelli's on the rear, as these 2 tyres have different grip/handling characteristics in both wet and dry conditions.
Also if your changing tyre width i.e. going from 215 to 225, then always change all 4.

What is the difference between the T1S and T1R's, i have the T1S and to be honest they seem a little skittish in the wet

T1R's are a big improvement in the wet on the T1S's. But I love the Yoko Parada 2's. IMO best tyre for reasonable money.

T1R are slightly better in the wet IMHO.
I had the same thing with the T1S it wasn't bad but noticeable.

You can just change 2 tyres, but like Ben v7 I used to rotate mine every few thousand miles to help keep the wear even.

I was also told once by a tyre dealer that the tread depth from the front tyres should be no more than 3mm diference to the rear tyres and vice versa... if that makes sense. Anyone know if this is true or was the tyre dealer just spinning me a line??

Subaru do say so, (not sure if it's 3mm though).

i find with toyos the inner edges wear out rather quickley as i changed the front two last month and you could see the whole canvas, the wall was ok just the top was no more, i then changed from toyos to AVON ZZ3's £85 inc fitting from just tyres if you order online :-D

Sounds like your alignment needs checking to me. I've gone through 3 sets of T1S and i'm on my first set of T1R and the edges have only ever been a touch more worn than the middle at most.
As far as handling is concerned, i'm not expert enough to tell you if there is any real difference between both the Toyos.
I've only ever got 13k miles out of the T1S and up to press i've had over 10k out of the R's and they have loads of meat left, so i think i'll be having the same again

This was the case with Opel/Vauxhall four wheel drive cars (if you think this is bad: I heard a 'skilled technician' tell someone with a damaged rear differential to "remove the fuse" to make the car FWD, until he could get it repaired! -when I said "that may work on a Vauxhall but do you actually know how these work? he threw a strop-), because the transfer box was made of plasticene..... Imprezas arent nearly as sensitive to differing rolling radii, so you can safely change an axle at a time.

i had a set of toyo T1-s's and was unimpressed with them. as mentioned already they wear very quickly on the edges of the tyre and i found the side wall too soft as well - you could feel it leaning on hard cornering. All in all i got 9,000 miles out of them and i don't drive flat out all the time.

Have since got a set of Goodyear F! GSD3's - these seem much better all round

Edited to say toyo have increased the strength of the tyre walls and edges on the T1-Rs to combat the problems mentioned above

Default Goodyear

I had Bridgestone potenzas when i took delivery of my scooby but i did not like them so I changed to Goodyear eagle F1 and found the road holding extremely good. They cost £85 a tyre in my local garage which in my opinion is the cheapest in the south .
To be honest I have not tried Toyo's so I can't comment .

T1S = Soft wall
T1R = Re-inforced (stiffer sidewall)

Is there more than one type of Goodyear Eagle F1 ? ie GSD3 plus another?

Can absolutely confirm what Stilover says about ensuring the both tyres are changed on the axle at the same time. Bought my 5 yr old WRX (now modded)
2 months ago. It had 3 separate brands of tyre fitted, 2 "Linglongs" on the back, one new Hancook on the front o/s and a fairly worn Michelin Sport on the other side !

And yes, it's rather hairy in the wet if you try to put power down when going round a bend !! I'll be getting 4 Goodyears in a few weeks !

Yep GSD2 and GSD3, not sure of the differences though. GSD3 is the newer model and is supposed to be better. I'm getting 2 of the GSD3's next weekend to replace the Bridgestones, so I'll report in a couple of weeks.

As a general rule you put the new ones the rear to make the handling more managable in the event that worn tyres lose grip

Had 4 fitted to my 03stippp last week 225/40/18 and they are superb for the money, low road noise, great dry grip and good wet grip, the only real question is how long they will last! They dont look much like a snow tyre thougth! so heres for a mild winter................
