This is already starting to bore me . . . .
. . .About to do an oil change myself, and manufacturer recommends a 10W40 semi for the lifetime of the car!
Pete . . Back me up on this one!

I've recently bought a 99 STI RA and phoned a dealer to check what oil.
He said 10/40 mobil or similar good quality brand. Semi Synthetic, NOT Synthetic. He said that Synthetic can damage seals. I haven't got a clue myself so I used as advised. Want to change Gearbox and diff oil now so need to check what is best for this now.

As has been said above - ignore all the crap about expensive oils.
Just put in 10W-40 ........... SEMI !!!!!!
No need at all to spend more than £15 for 5 Litres (don't get conned by the 4 Litre size!)
Gearbox oil is a bit different - I tried to find what is recomended, but you cannot buy it off the shelf (take a container to your friendly Subaru dealer and they will fill it up for you).

There are many, many threads on here about oil, some unfortunately then disappear off into unrelated arguments mostly with PS Lewis involved, so try doing a search and you can maybe wade through a few peoples opinions on the topic.
Synthetic oil can be made to be better than semi-synth : does an Impreza need this ? PS Lewis thinks not (as he has already posted : in his opinion the cheapest oil to the Subaru recommended spec is his beloved Comma semi-synth at £15 for 5l) Pete however doesn't like to drive his car hard : to do so is the sign of an immature boy racer or something like that.
Most people with this type of car WILL drive it hard at least sometimes and the greater protection provided by the better/more expensive oil might be worth it if your car gets driven hard.
As your car is modified (what sort of power ?) then going by the book is quite possibly not the best move and for the comparatively small extra cost involved, something like the Silkolene or Motul oils might be better suited.

Subaru RECOMMEND 15W-40 SEMI ........
Did they expect everyone who bought Impreza Turbos to NOT drive them hard??
Did they foooook!!! ... the car being driven hard is what they thought about ....
So, I repeat ...... put in what Subaru say - to do otherwise is an expensive folly!

Top quality fully synth available from Euro Car Parts (do a Yell search for your nearest). Fuchs (the makers of Silkolene) Titan Supersyn SL 5W40, and if you buy the 25 litre drum for 86 quid (makes sense if you're changing every 3k) it equates to 16 quid per drop. Oilman confirmed its excellent quality to me in a PM, but is unable to match ECP's price. Don't listen to the drivel, as long as its specs are up to the most recent synthetic standards and the grade is suitable for your car it will be superb. You only need to go up to 10W50 or 15W50 if you're running serious power or drive to the extreme (track very regularly). 5W40 is perfect in a Scoob, particularly in winter when 10W or 15W takes an age to get warm; 0W is too thin.

You could say owning a Subaru is an expensive folly!

I struggle to argue with your logic there as I have seen evidence first hand of crusades for more power end in blown engines and tears. FACT if you modify your car it will affect reliability no question, however what you lose on the one hand you gain on the other i.e more power and performance. This quest for more power can become addictive and thus leads to more modifying. However ask anyone who has spent thousands on their car if it was worth it and most will say no. They won't have regretted it but will concede it wasn't worth it. I can see the point from both camps and for the record I am not **** licking Pete so don't feel the compulsion to neg rep me please.
