Whats Difference between, STi 9 JDM & English!!
Hi,
Im looking to get a STi 9. I know the Jap Scoob is 2.0 and the UK is 2.5, and the Jap revs to 8,000 and the UK to 7,000. But what i want to know is what is the better engine to have, and whats the difference between the 2 cars.

the version 9,s all have 2ltr engines. the jap spec ones have better turbo, cams and heads, more power as standard and definately DCCD plus im sure the jap spec rev to 8300rpm not that ive ever went that high up in mine

Firstly, it's only the new shape 2006 Impreza that has the 2.5 engine. All STi models prior to that have the 2.0 engine. Here's a list of the JDM differences, specifically 03 and 04 cars:
Twin scroll titanium turbo (spools up quicker than the single scroll on UK cars)
Equal length exhaust manifolds (for much better gas flow)
HID headlamps (xenons)
DCCD Drivers control centre differential
Quick rack steering by STI (turns into corners quicker than UK steering)
Privacy glass
Rear wiper
Clutch only engine start
Electric folding mirrors
Automatic intercooler water spray
Red dials with variable dimmer
STi carbon fibre strut brace
Roughly 320 bhp
Revised internal engine settings
BBS gold alloys
I think wider tyres, 235's not 225's like UK cars.
Driving a JDM STi will have a similar urgency as, say for example, driving an Evo FQ 300.

I'm not sure what the 'version 8, 9, 10...' models refer to - I've never seen them identified as such in any Subaru official material.
The photo is an '06 model, which is the first to get the 2.5 engine in the UK. Previous years all have the 2.0 engine. All JDM STIs are 2.0 including the current model.

This STi 7/8/9/10 thing is just so confusing and complete *******
2000MY was STi6
2001MY wasn't STi7
2002MY wasn't STi8
2003MY wsan't STi9
2004MY wasn't STi10
2005MY wasn't STi11
2006MY wasn't STi12
and 2007 won't be STi13
The STi7/8/9... wasn't ever used by STi but has ALWAYS been misused by the aftermarket. There are differences between the various MY cars which would have been more than the differences between STi5 and 6 so should have been enough to increment the number by 1 for a MY change.
Any chance we can all stick to MY to identify the various versions as it's the only way of making sure we are all talking about the same thing??

Here's what JDM STI gets over a UK spec STI:
- still use the EJ20 (2 litre) engine
- Twin Scroll Turbo
- Nitride coated, cross drilled crank (improved hardness and oiling)
- 13:1 STI quick rack
- Slightly larger I/C design
- Auto and manual I/C spray (UK get manual activation only)
- More aggressive inlet cams
- Equal length headers
- Rear wash wipe
- Electric folding wing mirrors
- Privacy glass
- 235 width tyres (UK get 225)
- Additional yaw sensors for the Active Centre Diff
- 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th same as UK, 5th and 6th are shorter
- Front STI Titanium strut brace
- 8,000rpm Redline

Here's what the Spec C gets over the JDM STI:
- Roller Bearing Twin Scroll Turbo (improved spool and reliability)
- Larger valved heads for improved flow (not 100% sure as this may apply to all JDM cars)
- Rear strut brace
- Lightweight boot lid
- Lightweight bonnet
- Lightweight body panels
- Lightweight glass all round
- Lightweight roof skin with roof vent
- Lightweight interior carpets/no sound deadening/no carpets in the boot
- Lightweight battery
- No rear wash wipe
- Lightweight electric window motors
- No underseal
- Larger volume radiator
- Larger volume water pump
- Larger Power Steering pump
- Rotating Chamber Anti-Surge Fuel assembly
- Engine Oil cooler
- Gearbox Oil Cooler
- Power Steering Oil cooler
- 12 litre water spray tank located in the boot (4 litre placed in engine bay on standard STI)
- Black STI seats
- Seam welded strut towers for improved chassis strength and stiffness
- Additional seam welding in specific areas
- Various 'redundant' metal structures removed to further reduce weight
Here's what the Spec C TypeRA gets over the standard Spec C:
- 350 produced Worldwide
- Lightweight multispoke BBS alloy wheels
- STI front lipspoiler
- 'Spec C TypeRA - Keep attacking the Nurburgring' decals on front doors
- 'Spec C TypeRA' rear boot ornament
- STI 4-way adjustable shocks and unique springs
- STI pillowball rear lateral links
- STI pillowball rear trailing arms
- STI 21mm uprated anti-roll bar with STI ball jointed stabiliser brackets
- Alloy heater controls
Someone did tell me not long ago that the Spec TypeRA also has a larger inlet manifold over the standard Spec C. Is that true?

From: 1600cc's of twin scroll fun :)
- Rear strut brace
Build into the suspension rather than across the rear, its underbody
- Lightweight boot lid
nope, its steel
- Lightweight bonnet
Aluminium
- Lightweight body panels
Roof only, still steel
- Lightweight glass all round
Yes
- Lightweight roof skin with roof vent
Yes
- Lightweight interior carpets/no sound deadening/no carpets in the boot
The seats are lightweight also
- Lightweight battery
Yes it fits into a justy, or is that the other way round?
- No rear wash wipe
correct
- Lightweight electric window motors
Nope, early models didnt have any motors, they weigh too much, new models are 10kg heavier due to motors
- No underseal
correct
- Larger volume radiator
not sure about larger volume, better cooling is a better way to put it, it still takes the same ammount of water in the system as a normal sti its just a better quality rad with better cooling abilities
- Larger volume water pump
dunno
- Larger Power Steering pump
doubt that
- Rotating Chamber Anti-Surge Fuel assembly
yes
- Engine Oil cooler
yes
- Gearbox Oil Cooler
Think they class it as "transmission" oil cooler
- Power Steering Oil cooler
as above think it covers both
- 12 litre water spray tank located in the boot (4 litre placed in engine bay on standard STI)
yes but with a reduction within the fuel tank by 10ltrs to compensate
- Black STI seats
blue on earlier versions, lightweight
- Seam welded strut towers for improved chassis strength and stiffness
yes
- Additional seam welding in specific areas
yes
- Various 'redundant' metal structures removed to further reduce weight
true but they replaced it with a redesigned subframe which is just as strong but lighter
Even the earlier Spec C's (03/04) cars are a match if not better than the evo 9, ive been saying this for some time but no one seems to understand (and the fact ive probably been one of the only people to have been in both, the Spec C does grip better and there is no understeer).
The 05/06 versions are more like cosmetic changes rather than a complete overhall, the biggest changes were from the 03/04 to the 05 model when there were uprated manifolds, yaw sensors for the A-DCCD (also uprated).
Engine wise there is also the larger ported headers on the Spec C that you dont get on any other impreza
