Q for GC8,Corradoboy,Stev,BOB'5 & Tony
Hi,
A question for the clever folk on Scoobynet !!
Just bought 4 Toyo TR1's from my local dealer and they changed the pressures from 32 all round to 33 F, 31 Rear. Big improvement in handling !
Decided to do a "search" but could find no real consensus !!
So what tyre pressures are you guys running ?
My car's a mapped 01 bug (Prodrive headlamps !) with Prodrive springs plus Whiteline ARB and droplinks.
Thanks in advance !
Andy

Hi Andy
Not sure about the clever bit
I usually go for 33 at the front and 30 at the back, but will increase the pressure in the rears a wee bit (31/32) if the car is heavily laden.

When I first came on Scoobynet i read a thread where someone said it should be 32F and 34 REAR !! I can confirm that made the car handle horribly !
Consensus seems to be about 3 more PSI in the front ?
And does higher pressure (eg 35 at the front) mean the car is more skittish in the wet ??

The Subaru recommended settings are 33 front and 31 rear on my MY04STi.
I always dial this in (cold) when setting out for a fast run on the road.
On track days you get all sorts of advice, usually to put more pressure in. Personally I now start track days at the 33/31 and adjust if necessary once I have got a feel for the day. It all depends on conditions - for example on a torrential day at Elvington I uppped the pressures to high 38/36 and suddenly I lost loads of grip and in fact spun the car at quite a speed. Dropped the pressures back to 31/33 and she behaved nicely again.
No expert - but my feedback based on experience.

Tryes a bit of a dark art - best to mess about with different pressures to see what suits you.
For the road - with a scoob - I always put in less Psi in the rears and more in the front.
The reason for this is to make on the limit handling more predictable.
Taking a standard scoob 50-50 power distribution front and rear. If driven properly this will understear on the limits of its grip.
So given that fast, safe progress is all about what a car will do predictably on the limits of its grip - More air in the front makes for a ´harder´ tyre - it may even fractionaly lessen the contact patch. So the Fronts will definately go first, It will understear, I know exactlywhat it is going to do.
Less in the rears makes for a ´softer´ tyre
and so therefore gives more grip. They will let go after the fronts -unless you start trail lifting, breaking etc.
Hope this explains why different pressures are good for ROAD driving.

Well said. I used to change my tyre pressures slightly depending on what driving i was doing. A weekend blast on Peak tour or something I used to run 31/32 F and 31/30 rear and day to day (i.e. where I wasn't ragging it around). I used to run 33 F 32 R. With these higher pressure over time I found that the tyre wear rate was reduced and so didn't need changing as often
I guess also when you are doing a spirited drive as the tyre heats the pressure rises in the tyre anyway ? I think thats right
You might find a bigger improvement if you fill the tyres with an inert gas instead of standard air as the pressures will be less prone to moving
I may be all wrong with the above but it seems to make sense to me

On my last Impreza I started off with 36 PSI at the front, but eventually settled for 34 PSI, which I felt gave the best balance and suited most weather conditions. In the RB5 I usually go for 33 or occasionally 34 PSI at the fronts.
High Pressure (36psi) made my car slightly more skittish in the wet and it had a bit less traction in the snow, but it was marginal. I went slightly lower as I did not notice much difference as far as grip was concerned in the dry, but it improved the ride quality.
I would try 36psi on the fronts and then experiment with a few lower settings down to 33 PSI in various conditions and you will find your preferred level.

- how do you add a URL address to S'net, as you did here ?
thanks again,

Cheers Tony (apologies for forgetting your second name ! ).
What's the bhp on a std Spec C by the way ? Is it simply a remapped STi ?

My car was rolling roaded last time at 318bhp (original Jap Map and standard exhaust system), with just an STi panel filter and a 3 inch H&S back box with 356lbs of torque, will "possably" have her on the rollers tomorrow with just v power in to see if there is any difference (previously using optimax and octane booster)
