Hi guys,
Im going to look at a damaged impreza on sat but its gonna be a project over the next year or so, i wont be wanting a YEARS insurance or 6 MONTHS tax just for the 20 mile journey hom, as it is gonna be stationary for some time. Is there anything i can do to legally drive it home this distance ?

If you buy it get someone else to drive it home. Vast majority of insurance will cover the insured to drive other peoples vehicles so your mate will be covered. It's only absolute minimum legal cover, sort of 3rd party only, not even fire or theft, but if it's one journey that'll be OK.
Either risk the tax or as previous poster said tax it then claim a refund. You'll end up paying for the whole month as you can only get tax from 1st and have to cancel it from the beginning of next month. But better than paying for a whole year. If you do go this way then it's worth taxing it for a year rather than 6 months, daft as it seems if you only plan to use a month. The reason is because the 6 month fee is half the 12 month fee plus an extra bit. Then when you cash it in you get 5/6 of the 6 month fee back but lose the extra bit, if you go for a whole year you get 11/12 back and lose naught.
When you cash your tax in make sure you declare SORN or the robbing b*st*rds will stitch you up. And make sure you renew SORN if it takes more than 12 months to get it on the road, they often "forget" to send reminders out and rob you again.

borrow a car with a towbar, hire a trailer and job done for £30
drive it at night, no insurance or MoT, and risk a fine of about £200 plus any back duty. Have an accident involving personal injury to someone else and you could be financially ruined for life - no more foreign holidays, no more car-related projects, no plasma TV or latest video games for the little kiddy-winkies, be guilt-ridden for the rest of your miserable existence.
Take your pick. I'd do the 30 quid option...

Spoke to my insurance people about this and they said there was NO requirement for it to be insured under any other policy. If I was driving it I was insured, end of.
I do know the Police try and make it awkward and some do say it must be insured elsewhere.

Thought I was right, thanks Shustir.
Banny sti - is there a requirement for a parked car to be insured? Don't see why there should be. Yes, if it gets stolen or catches fire it won't be covered but so what? And provided the original request was to drive a car from a garage or similar to the posters home address no need to park anyway.

If the car is going to be parked on the public highway needs to be taxed at the least one of my neibours had two cars picked up by the council and taken away now has to pay the back tax on both and needs to get insurance to re tax them if car is to be stored on private propety might be able to get it coverd on your household for a few£s more but check what it will be coverd for
