Just thought I ask other peoples opinion about other 4x4 cars. I’ve always fancied a 6R4 and do see some for sale in motoring weekly. Nobody ever seems to mention them here as a desirable, am I the only one who yearns after one.

I’ve seen some beasts (350 – 400bhp) advertised for around 20k (price of a new UK).

The only reason I can see for not getting one (over other 2 seaters) is my miss’s would kill me.

I’ve seen these things rally at clubman level and they waste all the recent jap 4x4’s.

So am I mad?

PS I own a STI scooby (not starting a slagging off thread).

Chris,

The problem with the 6R4 is that it 's predominantly a rally car. Engine lasts not very long and will set you back £10,000 for a half decnt rebuild. Double that for the gearbox. They are really just totally impractible, and were never really intended to be a usable road car, they were built because the rules at the time demanded it.

If you are rich enough, then to use one as a track car would be a blast, but even then, blow it up or crash it and it's a a second mortgage job.

Other than that it is still a very competitive tarmac car in the right hands.

ps If you get one, can I have a go?

Metro 6R4 is a top motor, derivative of the engine sits in the Jaguar XJ220.

They are pretty hardcore vehicles, a friend of mine has one and he is forever getting stopped by the police so they can have a look.

Traction is instant on anything but the most slippy surfaces and and the exhaust not at full chatter is like no other, it is so brutal.

Weird getting into one as the interior is like a....er...metro

You get the funniest looks from people as you drive along, nothing to do with the flames and popping from the exhaust you understand

Insurance could be steep and friends car has to be tucked up in the garage nice and early for insurance purposes.

yep, I'd have one.

laters

Thumbs up

There's a guy in Byfleet with an ex-works one. Only seen it around a couple of times, but it is utterly gorgeous. The superb noise sends a shiver down my spine, and he even drives it with intercom on - looking just like Tony Pond. (Hope he doesn't share the affinity of gateposts).

Cheers,

A friend of mine has one. It is tarmac spec with full Computervision livery. Very Cool!!

Unsurprisingly with a tubocharged V6 sitting in the boot is howls like a winner and is not very subtle.

I Love it!!

Chris,

If you get one, please, please, make sure you try to find a twin-turbo one.

Mind numbing acceleration.

The one Powerstation look after (hillclimber) used to be Will Gollops RallyX car.

Apparantly, it out accelerates an F1 car to something like 80 mph, but then of course an F1 car can do over 200 mph.

I was lucky enough have a to ride in this one and not only are you pushed into the seat, you are actually crushed into it. It pulls like nothing else and in all gears too.

That was on a nice wide runway, what it must be like to drive it up a narrow winding hill ? Well, I wouldn't want to try it

By the way, when are we all going to Santa Pod next

Cheers

Ian

Glad to see I’m not alone in my secret desire, shame it might be so impractical.

I thought most 6R4’s were no turbo, the ones I’ve seen have been anyway. They seemed to have some clever pre-injection system though.

The engine at full chat would be nice to here echoing around my towns’ local countryside.

I guess how impractical the car is depends on state of tune, people run from 250 to 650bhp versions (300 for a road car is a nice round figure).

I want one and that’s it, I’ll have to start selling drugs to afford one though…… perhaps I’ll just take the drugs and image I driving one.

Ps

Fastest thing I’ve been in so far is a Westfield with two zx900 engines in, going around Donny, now that was fast, we went past a Ultima GTR with no problems.
