hi tidgy, i prob got it wrong .does it make a difference mine being a jap import? i was told by a guy who had a scooby that my lamba sensor was by the abs box under the bonnet and that the sensor into the downpipe was just an oxygen sensor, who knows? i just dont want to hurt the engine if this sensor is supposed to be in.

You have all got it wrong.
The Lamda on a 96 car is basically in the up-pipe near the manifolds.

I don't know what the sensor is but when Hayward and Scott fitted my decat downpipe they left it disconnected. Last weekend I put my original downpipe back on and was a little confused as to where the wire hanging out of it plugged back in! Found it in the end though.

i have a MY96WRX i fitted full decat HKS Hyper and the down pipe had a threaded hole for me to put the sensor back into.
If you dont fit the sensor you will get check engine light all the time.

The threaded hole at the top of the pipe is for what (I think) is the Lambda sensor. But there's also a 18" long wire with a 2 pin plug on the end coming out at the bottom of the cat. I think the original question refers to this second wire.

Lambda sensor is on the down pipe. It measures the exhaust gases to see if its running to lean or to rich.

The one at the top of the downpipe is the lambda sensor. The one towards the bottom of downpipe, is the 'cat-fire' sensor, which is obviously not needed when you decat.
