How far can you push a car sales(person) for a deal ??

As I have had to sell my beloved STi ppp, I am now on the lookout for a Golf GT TDI 150hp (so I can re-discover what fuel economy feels like !!)
I saw one that was advertised at £11,750 at a VW dealer and phoned up to ask what his best price was. He said £11,150. I went down to see it and it's a "good'un".
I thought I'd be a cheeky b'stard and offered him £10,500. After he stopped laughing he said no, the car is £11,175.
I am offering cash, no trade in, so I said I can only do £10,500 and off I went, no sale.
My question is - How far can you push a salesperson at this time of year ??
I would have thought deals are thin on the ground, but as it's a Volkswagen main dealer he can probably afford to be choosy. Will I be in a better position in December ??
Cheers,
Graeme.

My local VW dealer woudn't budge from wanting full list on a new Golf Gti whilst offering the lowest px price on my old car of all the dealers I tried.
That's how I ended up with my current Sti - Motorpoint (yes, the car supermarket) gave me £1K more in px than the VW dealer offered whilst selling me a euro import STi for less than the VW dealer wanted for the Golf.

It's a Oct 03 - Golf GT TDI 150, 5 door, silver, 1 owner, 29,000 miles, in good condition apart from a few scrapes on the back bumper and a welded exhaust mount on the back box.

Why buy from a dealer, aren't there any for sale privately? You've got cash haven't you?

They are as hard to find as my STi ppp was.
It's either a good one or a really bad one !!
Must be silver, low miles, 5 door, 1 owner, etc. Quite a rare car.
I'm still struggling to come to terms with losing my Sti, for an oil burner of all things !!

I lost my WRX for an A3 TDi 130 - you do get used to it, but it doesn't make it any easier

He doesn't have to go down to £10.5k as he'll sell at over £11k all day long.
By all means wait until the end of the month but I'll bet he's sold it by then.

To be honest, looking at book, the 150's are not showing in that model until 04 onwards which is the new shape so bear in mind these figures are based upon a 130 which'll give you a rough idea:
'03 1.9 GT TDi 5 door 130PS
30K miles
Clean trade - £8650
Average - £8075
Below Average - £7475
Retail - £10750
Not being funny but it doesnt sound like retail condition. I'd say £10500 isn't a bad offer, I wouldn't pay a penny over £11k
If I were you, I'd look at buying a new car with a discount rather than. If you cant afford the full otr price look at finance, with the kind of discounts we get, finance rates are low enough to not worry and in the long run, all you're ever going to pay is the cars depreciation whether you buy new or used so why worry?
I'm not trying to bully you into it but it is worth looking at finance on a new car in comparison because it is unreal what doors open. I know a lot of people are living in the old school where they say if you cant afford it dont buy it. Its fair enough but when you think about it what is a finance agreement doing? Allowing you to do nothing more than pay the cars depreciation plus a couple of % interest. Paying that extra few % is the only difference between buying outright and financing but it gets you into a brand new car that doesnt need MOT'ing, has a three year warranty and has no miles on the clock

They wont budge, I lost a 53 WRX because I tried to push him to drop another £1000 off it as I saw the same make model on a 54 plate for the same price, he said go get that one then, left him two days to stew, I phoned them back, and they said it didnt sell so they put it back on the transporter and whisked it away,
. It was a hard lesson for me to learn, I had to wait another 6months for the right one to come along.

Here in finland it was a diferent story for me. Wanted to trade in my ford focus estate 1.6 zetec '99 with only 67,000KM on the clock - low.
Best trade in price i could get was 6000€, and that was an out of the hat figure. saw similar in the finnish auto trader going for close to the 10000€ mark.
Saw my WRX in another town, went and asked him a cash price. MY05 WRX in black with only 9000km on the clock. (but no stereo, engine heater or studded winter tyres and only 1 set of alloys)listed at 36750€, he said he could drop to 35000€ (cars are expensive here)and supply engine heating and 2nd set of alloys
Said i had to think about it and call him back. he called me back the next day, where i told him i was short. He offered to keep the price as it was but change the alloys to be studded winter tyres. Call back.
He called me again the following day. told him i was still short and he then asked if i was going to trade in my car instead of paying cash, asked me what i thought i would get for it. i told 10000€ he offered 10900€ and still gave the discounted price and threw in the tyres and engine heating. a VERY good deal.
so there are some good dealerships willing to bend
he still ahs my focus for sale with only 500€ mark up.
i was happy

true, it's a mixed bag, in finland they are forever doing roadworks and improving the motorways, always a fresh bit of tarmac, but the smaller roads are full of potholes. they start the maintenance in april may when the snow has cleared, **** about with it for ages and then when snow starts to drop in october they hastily cover it up to resume agáin the following april.
going a bit off topic now.
