I had a similar experience with my MY99 turbo. I was convinced the diff was on the way out then i read a thread describing a problem with a dump valve on here (i kid you not). Swapped the plastic dv for a forge one and never heard it since, think the spring/plastic must have failed.
Not saying it will definately work but its worth a try.

I've had a whine on my sport for a year or so.
I was told it could be the rear diff?
I was also told it was the wheel bearings?
Both seem alright to me, I'm convinced it's just the sound of my new(ish) tyres on road.

Jay I wasn't taking the pi55 mate, when I had my problem i could've sworn it was behind me. I even took it back and had a mechanic checking the diff with a stethoscope.
