Default MY06 Sti PPP - 2 months on..

Well here she is - 2 months after we got her...

Previous to this car we had a MY04 WRX PPP (blue). Overall we are very pleased with the change and love the colour ......

Its not really run in yet but feels very different to the WRX - the performance is more progressive - probably to do with the 2.5L engine. The handling is hard - ummm bone shaking - but feels safe (it does tram line quite a lot but I am used to that now).

A few observations....

1) We get 200 miles to 10 gallons (i.e. 20 MPG). I know one is not supposed to complain with these types of cars but I think it might be running a bit rich?

2) Performance for real world driving is amazing - its still ahead of its game (even if its coming to the end of the road)...

3) Rattles --grrrrr - I know again one is not supposed to complain too much but it does get on my nerves a bit. The worse is a rattle from the driver side dash mounted ventilation duct. This is not apparent when you first set off but gets worse as the car heats up (i.e. with the heater on). I assume this is the dash expanding. Its a pain cos its not always there when you want to take it to the garage to get it fixed.

4) Intercooler sprayer - not used it yet. Am I supposed to run this once in a while to stop the pipe work / water going stale?

5) DCCD - hmmmm I leave it in auto - not really sure what its doing to help. But I do tend to switch it to manual when parking otherwise the car makes some horrible noises and can actually spin the wheels?

Its still fab though ......

You will hear some light clicking from the front diff even with the DCCD in AUTO. This is unique to the latest cars with the helical front diff, you don't get it on any of the DCCD cars with only the suretrac. I've heard it on 2005 onwards cars.

Looks great. Black would have been my choice of colour too.

Regarding the mpg. You haven't said what type of driving. To give you an example, I can get over 30mpg out of mine taking it steady in out of town driving. However, committed driving or constanly in the first three gears around town and it will average 20mpg or less per tank.

As for the rattles... my dash rattles and getting worse with the hard suppension setup, but it doesn't bother me. On a new car like yours I would be back to the dealer regardless of whether it does it when it's only warm.

Heard good things about the 2.5 - even if it doesn't have that ballastic top end you get on the 2.0 variants, it does make for a very quick car in real world driving. Speaking to someone who recently went for a 450bhp rebuild - they went with the 2.5 purely because the low down punch makes it so quick on the road... plus the 2.0 closed deck block isn't available anymore so it was the best option.

Hi MarkyMark,

I got an identical scoob to you and find the petrol about the same 20MPG. No rattles though. When parking i have to use the ddc as it's like the brakes jamming on sometimes.

I am having the final touches to my Zero Sports Body kit put on this Tuesday so should look a little different.

I am also toying with the idea of the PPP upgrade

I'm finding the same with DCCD. Switch it back all the way to green and it loses that juddering. Tyres are a bloody nightmare and i'm assured that when they are changed for something else all tramlining dissapears. Apart from that, lovin it

I've just got an -06 STi in black (not PPP) and I'm loving it !! Great to hear you're still liking it after a couple of months (got mine this morning )

I haven't messed with the centre diff (assuming that's what ddc is), I haven't noticed any weird behaviour while parking though?

HI, Your rattle is probably coming from the tracker motion sensor ball (tracker technition), when parking / turning etc, just lift up the handbrake until the warning light lights up, no judder etc. i've done 6000 miles now and always get 27 mpg (it dose very few short trips, and no, I don't thrash it, but it's still the fastest car off the lights etc)

Phew - we are getting somewhere - the same problem here - push the vent slightly - or grab the fins and pull upwards and the noise stops, let go and it comes back again. Start from scratch on a cold morning and its not there.... for a while.....

So it has to be something specific rather than just one of those random things...

If you want to know what the DCCD is like when it's really locked up, put in in manual and fully locked and do some tight turns, you'll stop worrying about small noises in auto after that!

Regarding the DCCD i was at a Subaru course last week and the technical facilitator said at least one customer had been nearly killed because the DCCD had not been explained by the sales staff on the handover. The most important thing to remember is that with the DCCD locked in the rear biased position the car will naturally want to push straight on in corners or round roundabouts. I always explain that STI diffs and the VC are wound so tightly that some skipping/hopping at low speeds will be present but have to agree with Martin that noises do not normally accompany this. DCCD is a great feature but it's criminal that some dealers do not talk the customer through the massive changes it can promote in a cars handling characteristics.

Thanks for all comments so far...

Having been out in the car again I have to conceed that its not really a noise (I was perhaps a little over the top). 'Greenwood's' description of 'skipping / hopping' is nearer what I am experiencing ....

DCCD has never really been explained to me - put bluntly, for normal road use I have no idea what to set it to (other than auto).

That's an interesting point - not that I am in to traffic light burn off's - if one wants to get away quick, is Locked then better than Auto?

In the manual section 7-14 it says " a higher initial lsd torque setting gives the vehicle greater traction when driving straight ahead" It goes on to say that during cornering or when making turns the rotation difference between the front and the rear wheels may cause a braking effect accompanied by vibration and noise. This will disappear when you turn the center diff control to the rearmost position.

With the rotary dial in manual and wound right back giving the rear of the car more torque it improves acceleration in a straight line, in my mind the DCCD comes into it's own on a track but a vast majority of my customers leave it in the auto mode for driving on the public road. Again i can only stress that when in the rear position the car will have a natural tendancy to feel like it wants to go straight on when cornering which as some people have mentioned can be a lot of fun to experienced drivers but deadly to the novice. Thats the thing with these cars though as they flatter an average driver like myself and are very forgiving but when they do let go one would be going that fast it would take a great deal of skill to rein the car back in.

You are not wrong! Just tried this on a straight bit of road. Off the line acceleration with it wound back is certaily more urgent. However, got to the end of the straight piece of road and went round a roundabout to come back again - phew a bit hairy ... !!!!!

Hi,

I picked up my 06 STI on Wednesday last week. done 250 miles so far.
I originally ordered it in white with red flaps, had the type ra wheels all ready and the c/f front lip but the dealer called me up saying that there was none available and none being made now

I bought a set of P-FF7's with tyres from the dealer as they were offered to me for £500 (from a demonstrator) and went straight to Elite's to get them fitted. Cant stand the standard gold wheels.

I have the PPP to go on at the 1000 miles service along with the STI mats, blue flaps (still undecided on this) and front lip type RA. I have also ordered a Kenwood W808 unit and forester flap tray to replace the hideous tape/CD unit.

I noticed that the car park I park in at work, when reversing out and then going forward I noticed a funny twitch from the rear I put this down to the loose surface (stones and gravel) just thought that its to do with the DCCD.

I'm too scared to even mess about with the DCCD settings as I have no idea what it does and I dont want to find out

Cant say I've noticed any rattles yet, not looking forward to that!!!!

MPG's : I filled up, 45 litres and have done 3/4's of a tank to about 160 miles!!!! I'm hoping this will improve but surely it cant as I'm only running in and going up to 3500rpms

NICE LOOKING MY06

I got my 06 in Feb, and i must say i am dissapointed in the car because of the DCCD, this feature is absolute rubbish, and just does not work well.
To get the car to drive smooth (ish) you have to manually flick a switch and roll the torque to the rear! Forgetting this has already made me spin the car when pulling away from a tight junction. Try putting the diff in manual and the troque to the front and pull away from a junction swiftly, the car makes a very loud banging noise as the diff unwinds!
I have been to see the dealer, them and Subaru UK has said this is normal and is a "characteristic" of the car.

Another problem i have with the STI 06 is fuel starvation when cornering hard exiting a right hand bend at full acceleration, a technician from Subaru UK has suggested a number of components be replaced, but seeing as this fault is present on another STI 06 at the dealership i doubt this will be fixed by this replacement. Anyone else with an 06 experiencing this problem?

I have to say i am not impressed by Subaru and there attitude to this issue, these are expensive cars and i would expect a better quality product for my money.

I would like to speak to others with the MY06 STI, to see if they are happy with these problems.

Regards,
Darren

Ive lost the back end of mine a few times, but put it down to my bad driving! I love the car apart from the fuel consumption.

no issues with the DCCD, found it quite useful tbh, not for normal driving, but pushing it on back roads in the wet, to dial out understeer in the wet etc.

I have suffered from the fueling problem when exiting roundabouts, flat out into them, keeping the power fully on as i exit it and suddenly the power goes for a split second, this though was the same on my 03 sti, and seemed to occur if a gear was high in the rev range. Taking the same roundabout in a higher gear seemed to eliminate the problem, but you then dont have the same torque etc.

Had my 06 sti now for almost 2 weeks and love it. My thoughts so far:-

1/ With regards to the knocking / jumping etc in auto it does feel like you have 4 flat tyres, but if you let your partner drive in or out of parking bay you will notice the outside rear wheel spin / skip very slightly.

2/ I to have noticed this squeaking from the drivers vent area , not there when cold but as soon as it warms up it's there.

3/ the stereo is a load of ****e along with the speakers, this is going to be my first upgrade.

4/ fuel does not bother me as I can run it through my business

5/ as my wife drives it 99% of the time I'm not going to install a ppp

6/ as has been said the dccd was not explained to me in detail by the dealer as they dont know themselves and would love someone on SN to explain to me and all the others that ar'nt quite sure what settings to use and where to use them.

7/ same goes for the water spray system, please reveal all someone.

would love to be able to run one as a company car instead of a pickup but not sure if my licence would last long overall money well spent
