IVE GOT A MY98 RED IMPREZA, all the plastic parts (scoop, spoiler etc.) look a different red colour to the rest. Cant really tell that much normally in daylight, but at night or under false light (on petrol forecourts) they look like there off another car, dont think subaru would be interested.

Anything that can be done short of getting the bits painted ???

Is this something you have noticed recently or when you bought the car? Have you had the car from new? Plastic parts sometimes look a different colour but I would think a good machine polish would sort out the offending panels if due to fading.
I have my own car valeting business in HULL. Are'nt you a lucky guy
Pop in any day this week and I'll look at it for you and advise you on the course of action.
My biz is next to Miles Kingsport on Witham. If you turn into Miles Kingsport carpark and veer to the right you will see us, 'Scott's'

I noticed a slight change in the rear wing of my '98 before I traded it in last month.

Some improvement came from using Mark Underwood's HD Cleanse and 'Detail Wax' which seemed to restore some of the colour 'balance'. This was a Zymol product, so I don't know if there's a WW equivalent, or if Mark still has stock. You can only ask.

As I understand it, the change is a result of them using a different undercoat or paint for the plastic bits. If there are any other cures I would be interested to know, for future reference.

Cheers

Josh

Red is always a nightmare (whatever the car). Colour-matched red paint that looks fine in daylight looks like a patchwork quilt under sodium street lamps. I don't think there's much you can do about it.

I have a 94Sti and the scoop and vents are now a different colour to the body work

I have seen this before on other red cars, not just scoobies

Must admit I am not that impressed by it!!!

Yep I've got a MY96 two tone Red, very noticable, although as previously said the Wax Wizard Cleanse No. 2 made a slight difference, but not much.

I am going to be a real egg-head now, and tell you that you are suffering from a Metameric colour imbalance. (metameric means colours change under lighting)

Red is the worst colour in the spectrum for metameric colour changes under sodium lights, and is impossible to fix, without spraying the whole car with a single mix of paint.

Deadly Serious....I once had this phenomenon explained to me by a Major vehicle paint maker (PPG in Birmingham)

I used to be loosely associated with the vehicle re-fininshing business.

The main problem with the Impreza is the Scoop, Vents & both bumpers, which I know for a fact are sprayed in a completely different factory to the rest of the bodyshell. In fact I think the component suppliers themselves supply Subaru ready coloured parts, and they come together on the line.

Match? what match.

As I said before red is the most affected colour!!

Yep I agree - red is a nightmare.

Used to have a red Mazda MX3.
Loads of plastic bits.
It always looked a mess under street lamps etc

oh well.....

RichS,

Yeah I had a red MX5, but before it got too old I wrote it off, so solved the paint issue
