They look great ... but my front lower bumper is stuffed with scrapes without one and with an expensive splitter it would get muuuulllerd.
is it going to give me anything apart from looks or what am i missing ???

Think mines only on there to look good to be honest mate. Its the lowest part of the bumper so it will always get scuffed but the marks are usually underneath and out of sight so doesn't spoil the look of the car!

I have the official subaru splitter on my STI and ever since I had TSLs suspension kit put on it, it does get mullered
but its only the underside which no one sees so not that bad tbh, and this only when I encounter a sever camber, a local garage i use occasionally has a nasty ramp camber onto the main road and i have to literally drive an inch at a time to get through it as it sounds like im ripping the damn splitter apart.
Whether it actually does anything for the car erm well I wouldnt have thought so, it's just aesthetic I guess, it came on mine when I bought it a year old, must say I like the look with one, rather than without.

You could argue with something like a 'jun' on a classic if you have a FMIC that it forces some more air up into the intercooler, which is probably a fair point.

Splitters are there for aerodynamic reasons. To stop air going under the car and make it go over and around, this creates low pressure under the front of the car which results in a downforce.
To get the full effect they need to be as low to the ground as possible, fine on a race car but not on a road car. They look good too.

They do really work on some cars, my wife has a CF one on her MGF, without it you could not keep the car in a stright line on a motorway, sure it does work on a scoob to some degree but mine was put on for looks only.

i bought this £300 carbon fibre one when they first came out(tissue paper thin and about as strong) looked lovely until i decapitated my first rabbit with it then it was off into the garage for some much needed tiger sealing and metal bracketing to try and repair it. Still on at the mo but after more fast cornering and frozen slushy roads in the winter it looks a bit tatty but at 300 quid its stopping on till the death lol.
