Unhappy A WEE LESSON FOR STI OWNERS

Just got my MY04 WRX STI back from its 30k service at the dealers - £750!!!

This service included oil, filters, plugs and front/ rear (Brembo) pads - and that was with SIDC discount!!!

It's going back in next week for front shockers under warranty (the rears have already been done.) I have also managed to negotiate the tracking as well as they have now chenged all the shockers (under warranty.)

I also have new 2 new Toyos on order (£200) so it ain't going to be a cheap month!!

Just a word of warning to any would be buyers that these cars are NOT cheap to run!!!

The joys of Scooby ownership.

Next time take your car to a specialist, half your bill and never look back

Alot of these specialist centre's are owned and run by subaru trained mechanic's so have the experience and knowledge to service/repair/modify your sti,so you are in safe hands

just do some research here on scoobynet,as most of the specialist's come highly recommended

Had my MY03 STI in for a 3 year service(car only done 13k) Back in March and it cost 350 at a main stealer. Pads in your area must be pricey
Had my rear shockers done in August and while out today i thought i could sense that tell tale knock already

Is the 200 quid for two tyres, if so that sounds good. If for one, yikes!

Question

Did you shop around first fella? It's amazing the different prices you'll get for the same service at alternative garages!!

very true with cost of ownership, i bought mine with 3 years free servicing so i thought happy days, cheap running for a couple of years

i've since done (and will continue to do so) a 6 month oil change at dealers, fitted braided lines and fitted prodrive b/box and de-res pipe. oh and a splitter and bought a spare set of wheels for the winter and some PS2 tyres!

ok, these were all off my own back but still nearly a grand for what i thought were essentials

bills creep up on you with these cars!

re: your bill though, take off the pad price (must have been over £300 at a guess) and the price of a biggie service isn't that bad.

shop around for the pads next time

£300 for pads ? WTF - I paid less than that for EBC RS pads all round - all in all about £90. Why are standard pads so dear ?

Ffft...and he didn't even get the cambelt done

The most expensive "full" service costs me just under £300 including cambelt and tensioner, gearbox+diff+engine oil, filters, brake fluid, coolant, spark plugs and even windscreen washer additive ( ).

Mind, the labour is free

And then a full set of Yako Prada2s for £228 fitted, yes, that is Four.

You guys need to make some better friends

I'm saying he paid through the nose and didn't even get that costly cambelt done, which I can get done for less than he paid for a standard service ...that'll be the next shocker when thats due

Yako=Yokohama, not sure how I managed to spell it like that

Stephen as I`m also from Glasgow please tell me the dealer I shouldn`t be going to! How anyone can charge £750 for the work carried out is unbelieveable.

I ain't going to name and shame as I like the dealers I go to. I am sure materials and labour are consistent at Subaru dealers and the parts are expensive. I like the FSSH and so get the standard parts which are expensive.

£98.50 from mytyres.co.uk - Tyres for PASSENGER CARs cheap, bargains, look + save indeed. This is for Toyo Proxies T1R's.

BTW, the car already has TSL 333!!!

Prices do vary between dealers. Two Dealers within 30 miles of me, one 30K service was £100 cheaper than the other Parts were the same but there was a HUGE difference in Hourly rates.

Its scary what folks charge . Its worth spending time ringing round for quotes and the extra expensive in petrol to get it serviced alittle farther afield. It shocks me how much dealers charge for brake pads and labour charges . Even someone with limited mechanical experience can change the pads in approx 1hr.

Robby,

if your Prefered Dealer is dearer or closer to you Try "Price match" my old Dealer would try and match any Price given by another "Dealer"

the day the warrenty is up i'll be on the rollers somewhere mate

i don't think you've been stitched up at all steven, i don't believe for a second that most scooby owners have not had big bills (IIRC i had some large ones on my old classic towards the end) you might have saved yourself £100 if you'd supplied some bits yourself and from i've seen most independant places wouldn't have saved much more than that either.

From memory... brembo pads from Subaru for my 02 STI were £187 for the fronts and about £140 for the rears. Hence I took the decision to fit EBC pads instead which were roughly half the price.

Our basic services often come out much cheaper than dealer prices, but if you end up with discs, pads and whatever else needs replacing, we have often done it for half the price of a dealer. However some dealers are MUCH cheaper than others, so it pays to shop around first.

Most specialist can/will use OE or OE approved parts and maintain your warranty too.

Big ends don't just "go" in most cases, its noted that the still "good" remaining bearings are worn out. Probably through prolonged enthusiatic driving, or long term neglect, or being driven hard and for prolonged periods with a sensor malfunction, or agressive and/or incorrect ECU maps and/or mods and/or incorrect oil/change intervals for those circumstances.

A dry crank would just finish off a already half dead engine.

And if it happened at a main dealer, it would be highly likely they would be using the wrong oil for the driver's "enthusiatic" driving style or engine mods. Or the driver was ignorant to the fact that their driving style/mods need increased oil change intervals for that type of oil they use (or just use a better oil instead). IMO, of course

Fair enough mate. I too like the FSSH but I know from experience that different dealers charge different hourly rates.

I've just had my 20k service there. £189, which i thought was good. They changed the front shocks too, skimmed the discs all under warranty etc.

They have excellent service and will continue to get my business.

A big portion of that £750 has gotta be the pads. I think it was £260 for front and rear DS2500's.
