Ram Air -
#1
When i bought my MY00 the garage had put in a Ram Air filter - i have found the car has a bit of lagg - my garage are very helpful and will have a look at it when i take it in, but i was wondering if anyone else had the ame problem - I use Optimax petrol which has improved it slightly but i spoke to someone else who said that the Ram Air was rubbish - can anyone advise me what to do to improve the response when pulling away and at lower revs.
Thanks

The Ramair is no longer recommended by Prodrive for the MY00 (or MY99), presumably due to the hot film MAF which is more sensitive than the wire type fitted to earlier cars.
I fitted a K&N 57i induction kit and would recommend it...
Check the bottom of your airbox after removing the ramair - you'll be shocked!
Nick.

However, Chiark did not tell you that the K&N "sucks harder than a Dutch prostitute". (I think that was his phrase). Anyway, it is quite noisy.
If your dealer fitted a Ramair they should have their knuckles rapped for the above reasons. I would demand that they check the MAF sensor on the Select Monitor and replace it as necessary at their cost or under warranty if it is at fault.
Other than that you may have the infamous MY00 hesitation problem - which is usually only present until the engine is warm but otherwise is billed as a characteristic of the car. But mine doesn't do it when hot.
Edited to say that all Subaru Turbos have noticeable lag below 2000rpm, some below 3000rpm, and the engine sounds as gruff as a gruff thing at 1000rpm in a higher gear. Certainly no V6... The turbo engine is set with a low compression ratio to cope with all the boost - the downside being that below 2000rpm it drives like a 1.4, but above 3000rpm it feels like a 4.0L.

Oh MY00 had MAF failure, it had a RAM panel filter in when I bought it..I did ask them when I collected it from repiar if it was the filter that had buggered it and |I was told "no the RAM-AIR is the recommended filter" reading this thread I think otherwise...
Are the K+N oil soaked like the RAM? I don't want to be having to pay for a MAF when the warranty runs out

Interesting reading - I've got an MY99 with a RamAir filter.
It was already on the car when I brought it privately. The Scooby had a 37.5k service end of October and nothing was mentioned.
Time to pull the lid off the airbox I think...
