The 92-95 honda civic vti with the 158bhp 3 door hatch would be a good one to go for. seen k reg's for 3K. Since then I got a 4 door version with the civic-r cams ,chipped, hks induction kit, spoon sports ventuli plate, full supersprint system inc 4-2-1 manifold,
fuel valve riser (fully adjustable). The performance is a big difference to standard but if i did this to a 3 door hatch it would be mega. just my 2 pence worth.

![Question](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/icons/icon5.gif)
my girlfriends brother has seen the light, and is moving over to jap cars from xr3's.
he only has a budget of around 3.5k. he needs a good reliable, reasonably quick car.
the shortlist is...
nissan 200sx s13
mazda mx-6
mr2
has anyone any experience of these cars? anyone got any better suggestions, coz i'm a bit stuck to be honest. i dont want to badly advise the lad.
dj fish suggested a peek at the 200sx bbs, but all i could see were posts about how t1ts up the engines go with high mileage.
any suggestions gratefully recieved

The MX6 will be the most comfortable and refined and the 200sx and MR2 (as long as it's a G-Limited or a turbo) will be a bit faster and more 'fun'. Depends on his priorities and what he thinks of their looks. You will be close to Prelude VTEC territory for that money and that would be my choice. Used to own one so maybe a bit biased - fabulous engine and sharp handling.

cheers mate
the prelude 2.2 vtec was his first choice, but they seem to be hard to get hold of for less than 4k.
how reliable are the prelude vtecs? what would you suggest for some good mods for it?
at what sort of mileage would u say 'dont bother'? or do they go to high mileages?
thanks for your help

Just a quick note on the Honda VTEC engines. Honda have never had a warranty claim on the engine, out of 750,000 built not one needed replacing, says it all really.

MR2 any day of the week - had mine for 7 months now and love it.
Very reliable, and fast (as opposed to very fast, a la Scoob).
Mine is the 174bhp model and it is defo no slouch. Also great fun, with the brilliant handling (post 94) and RWD.
Running costs are good - just had major service which was £75 from a chap I know, other than that not much gone wrong. Needed a new radiator due to being holed by a stone. That cost £300 fitted, and now has mesh there to stop it happening again.
On the motorway it gives about 45mpg, around town about 25mpg.
You could get a nice J/K reg for about 3.5-4k.

well, we went and got his car today. he bought a celica gt4 turbo, fairly low mileage, immaculate condition. what a great little car for the money! solidly built, pretty quick(nothing that cant be improved with a few tweeks
)and looks good![Smile](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)
the owner had looked after it, ran it on super with octane booster etc.
he paid £3350, which for what he got is not a lotta dough.

Don't be so sure about Honda Vtecs, I know of at least two with serios problems, one an Integra type R had problems with porous cylinder heads, and another a, 2.2 prelude import, with valve seat regression.
I know of more Honda engine probs but confidentiality clause prevent me from saying anything else
