Default Boost RPM?

Hi folks,i wanted to know at what RPM should my boost kick in when driving in a spirited manner.I ask this as mine is 4500 to 5000 then tons of boost and was told by somebody today it should really be around 3500+ so is a bit late.My scoob is a 95 WRX import with a Z4 ecu.....but it has a superchip on it(which i would like to remove),HKS filter kit, decat exhaust,HKS DV and a strange thing coming from a t piece in the small pipe to turbo wastegate,it looks like it has a screw adjuster on it and an atmosphere filter(sort of thing you find on air tools etc). Please give some helpful advice?

Looks like you've got a manual boost controller on there, do you have a boost gauge? The best thing to do would be to ditch the superchip and get a scooby ecu.

4500 is a bit late, unless you've got a turbo the size of a house on there.

If you dont have, or dont have access to some boost guages etc. Then i suggest you get down to a decent rolling road for diagnostics. That will show you what is wrong etc.

Yep i have a HKS guage,i just been talking to previous owners and essex turbos who supplied them with a recon turbo.Turns out the previous owner said the turbo was overboosting,so they took off the 3 bolts at back of turbo and adjusted the actuator arm?!?! to basically reduce the boost?!!?.Surely the overboosting was caused by the Superpants chip?.Now i guess i should remove superpants chip and get myself to a tuner to set up the turbo properly.Should i remove the valve as well and would all of this be the reason for my lack of earlier boost? Can i safely take off the chip and will car run ok if i do?

Just take it to the tuner as is. Then they can sort it all out. Better than doing something to shaft it unknowingly.

Yes mate, i would have thought (if that T-piece with the screw is a boost controller) they would have turned it down from there?? Adjusting the actuator isn't a good thing to be doing. To be on the safe side get to a specialist to have it looked at, sooner rather than later.

I think i'm right in saying that you should hear the turbo start to spool at about 2800rpm and should be on full boost by about 3500 ish. so sounds very late coming on boost. i'm upto 1.1bar at 3500 on a 99uk.
as said befor mate get it on some rollers and they will be able to tell you whats up.

The old owner was prob getting over boost because he had not had the car mapped properly and just gone for said 'superchip'

I can hear turbo spooling up after 3000 but i get a full whack of power like a surge at the 4500 5000 mark, quite scary on the dual carriageways, but it seems to want to keep pulling at 5000+ .I am just still learning the ropes with these cars and not sure what sort of gear and power etc should kick in and what it feels like eg:gradual build up or big whoosh all at once?

My car pulls hard from about 3500 round to 6500ish. it should feel like a nice even pull not like a big smack up the ****. it is most likly gonna be a combo of the crappy supperchip and boost controler. sound like the turbo starts to spool but you're getting massive lag for some reson hence the big wack of boost. id get it on some rollers asap and maybe change to a standard ecu or ecutec remmap (not sure if they will go on your year of car though)

I've got a WRX ra fitted with a scoobyecu and the normal TD05 turbo. You can feel the turbo building from about 3500rpm, but the real kick is between 4500 and 5000.
So what you have sounds about right.
I use this car as a stripped down track car, so having all the power from 5000-7000 rpm is perfect for me, but I wouldn't like to use it as a daily car.

DCR59,what you have described is just like mine,a build up after 3500 then about 4500/5000 rpm whoosh. It reminds me a bit like my old FTO with the mivec(variable valve) timing you had to work the gears to keep the revs up,that was a normal car until 5600+ then a different beast altogether.I just thought that scoobies would have a lot more earlier down.Do you think it is because it is an import?

It's because it's one of the older models with the relatiely large turbo, and some restrictive exhaust bits etc. The later UK ones if mapped properly, with a decent exhaust and the smaller TD04 turbo would be boosting pretty well by well before 3000rpm. Even with the TD05, you should be able to get it to spool very strongly by about 3500rpm with a few mods (decat downpipe, and something like a Power FC ECU mapped for your car)

After some extensive web research, it sounds as though my car is ok,as it has a TD05 the general opinion is that they suffer from lag but have a bigger hit and for longer than the UK models, especially around the 5000 rpm mark. This puts my mind at rest, but the chip will be coming off and a session at a rr tuner is next on my list in the new year!!

Just wanted to bring this up for a refresh as i am still unconvinced, out today caning the car and i put my foot down and below 3000/3500 it seems a bit sluggish then at 4000/5000rpm its all go but in a very short space of time i am in the red zone and need to change gear,it seems an awfully busy affair constantly working up/down gears.I hear the above guys saying they are on full boost around 3000rpm,mine is nowhere near that. Are there any more JDM WRX classic owners out there with some info/help?
