Default legacy engine on sti?

hi everyone just a quick question, is it possible to fit a legacy 2.5lt engine (non turbo) to work with sti 6 speed gear box and ecu? i am talking about newage here (my01-02). basicly have found a my02 sti with a foulty engine (turbo in very good condition), and i want to go 2.5lt route but don't have the funds. hopefully will do a 2,5lt sti shortblock upgrade when i source more cash. any help appreciated.
thanx in advance
matt
