Which to get... STi Impreza or Lancer Evo?
#1
Hi,
Christmas is coming and the bank (loan) is getting fat,
Matt has to get something else other than the Cupra and
currently has a couple of options...
Subaru (again) but an STi of some description, ideally a 5 V.Ltd but would consider a really nice 4 or 5 (R/RA's perhaps), maybe even a nice RB5.
Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 4/5/6
What do you think the going rate price-wise for these cars is and do you think it is a good time to buy now or after christmas (thinking on the skint-scale).
Also... what would you buy and why?

Hi,
Saw a mint low milage EVO IV at an importers this week, £13.995.
A EVO V would be about £16-17k i think.
And a nice EVO VI is around £20k.
Saw a nice low milage STi 4 Type R, £14.995.
You could get a version 5 for that money though.
RB5's can be had for £15k but will rise up to £17-18+k for a nice one from a Subaru forecourt.
Obviously the above cars can be had cheaper but this is just my opinion. By the same token they can be more expensive (eg EVO VI from Ralliart £21.995). Depends whether you buy private or not.
As to what you should buy, well i don't think anyone can answer that. They are all great cars and its up to you. Personally i would take the STi V Type R cause i like em. Maybe you are more an EVO man though? The EVO v Scoob thing has been done loads of times before .
Hope this helps,
Kos.

Thanks for the comments guys, I am leaning toward an Evo at the mo, purely because I've had a scoob in the past and a change would be nice.
At the same time tho I have a real soft spot for a sonic blue STi... yum yum.
Price-wise I think you're about right, although I saw an RB5 in Listers for £20k !!! (it did have the Listers motorsport kit on it etc... v.nice but £20k!)

Kosy a nice Evo VI wil set you back around £23k and a nice RB5 of a forecourt can go up to £21/22
But all lluuuuuvvvveeeeellllyyyy cars.
Evo's are expensive to run... my friend gets 160 miles to a £42 tank of fuel.
Also servicing and parts are expensive not to mention the Insurance
But if you can live with all that very very good cars!!!
Cant go wrong with the Scoobs though!!

As an Evo owner, the best advice I could give is to test drive one first to see if you like them because despite the us vs them debate, they are very different cars to drive.
The Evo as an everyday car can become a bit sore on the backside due to the suspension but as a evening / weekend car it is superb. Having said that, I still use my evo everyday but only 1 week in 2 (the other half gets it for the other week )
The scoobies sound far better and are a far better ride for everyday use but the brakes don't compare to the Evo's stopping power IMHO but whichever you choose, you will have a superb car.

Plantie, he must have a hole in his tank then :O
I get 120 - 130 miles out of £20 worth of super in my E5.
The EVO's are also easy to get over the 300 BHP mark.
Mine is running 333 BHP with a full Magnex downpipe, decat and system + Ralliart filter. evojkp's is running 341 BHP with
further mods.
Take a VI for a test drive, you wont look back!

how's it going dudette, you still got your WRX?
As for the car to get...hmm, still not sure, I like Evo's purely because they are a bit rarer, are beasts (as are scoobies) and stuff. Re: insurance, are Evo's more expensive to insure than scoobs (I know it will be a lot regardless of car).
Also... can anyone recommend any good dealerships, I know of Warrender and a couple of the import places but has anyone got any other suggestions?
I hate cars! decisions n'all....grrrrr

I've got a silver Evo VI GSR which will be up for sale in late Feb (probably - it looks like I'm moving to San Diego, which is nice).
It'll have done about 21k miles by then - pretty tidy bar a few stone chips and a bent mesh bit over the radiator - sodding pheasants.
Completely standard and will have a Mistubishi warranty until October 2003.
Average fuel consumption works out about 20 mpg in normal use, 6 if you're a hooligan (emptied a tank in 70 miles once). Normally I get about 190 miles to a tank.
The only thing I'd say is if you get one with the ****ty Brembo brakes (as standard) be prepared to bung £1,600 + VAT at it to stop the front disks warping continuously (6 sets and counting on mine, and I don't use it that hard) for an AP Racing or Mov'It brake conversion. Based on my experience, if you get one that warps either sell it or buy some better brakes otherwise it will drive you nuts
Oh, and try to avoid buying one near the 18,000 mile service as that's sodding expensive

Ive had both a P1 and currently a Evo VI. Although the evo feels quicker the suspension drives me nuts. The missus hates it.
I'm using the evo for everyday use and as soon as the STI arrives i'll be off to test drive one.
The bottom line is you must not only test drive them both but think about everyday use. If I had i wouldn't be driving the evo now!
Cheers

If you got to waregarage.com they are still offering a Makinen RS for about 23 grand, brand new. Doesn't have AYC & is lighter so its more purist and quicker.
Other than that the prices for 5,6's quoted so far seem correct. I paid about 21K for my 6 earlier in the year. At the mo prices on 6's seem to be holding well. As someone said make sure you test drive extensivley - the evo is not for everyone. Best to get one privately from eth MLR board that has been looked after properly and has a few nice bits already on it.
For my thoughts regarding P1 compared to an EVO, see:
http://www.jackals-forge.com/lotus/evo/evop1.html
BTW: before the war breaks out theres no winner, i just tried to give an more accurate picture of why these 2 cars are so different.

Many of the evo prices quoted in this thread seem a tad high. Check out the lancer forum http://www.lancerregister.com cars for sale section to get an idea of prices. There are some stonking modified Evo 6s going for under 20K
My contribution would be to say that the Scooby seems to be a considerably lower maintenance car than the Evo.
I have rock solid suspension on my earlier evo, way stiffer than standard. Personally I have never felt it to be uncomfortable in the least. I use the car every day, mainly around town. fuel consumption is a killer though. A fuel controller would sort that out for 300 quid or so though.

I was thinking STi 7 but now I'm unsure having spoken to a few people due to the weight of the STi. So I've had a look at a few Evo 6's.
On Autotrader (Top Marques) there are loads at the moment Evo 4's @ £11500 and 6's from £18000 - £21500.
Is the fuel consumtion really that much worse than a scoob?
My scoob averages 190 miles on a tank £38.00ish.

Jeremy,
I dont think that mpg is any worse than a 280bhp scooby.
From a 32 quid fill I get about 160 miles every week. Thats with mods that decrease mpg as well like blow off valve etc... and regular 1-metre fuel-sapping flameouts !
Personally i think that compeared to the likes of 5 litre griff, esprit v8 turbo etc... these Jap cars give pretty good mpg for the performance that you get. Never quite understood why people whinge about the mpg so much in any case. My evo is only a fraction worse than an old Seat Leon 20VT that I had and thats a much much slower car !

120 miles off 42 quid is way wrong for an evo. I get about 170 out of 32 quid (super) in evo
edited to admit that if I cane it everywhere then that will drop considerably, but the figures I get are around town mileage too which is always gonna be poor. It gets a bit better on the motorway (well until you start flooring it well over the ton)
Its the servicing etc. that gets me with the evo, not the fuel. every 4,500 miles or 6 months. Find that hard work

dunno bout the 6K. not many owners leave it this long, so yes it might well affect resale as it wouldn't have been serviced according to schedule.
think we're still comparing the two models here, so not really on a tangent?
What do you want the car for? just a painless drive? or something you're gonna devote all your time and cash too? will you be modding much.
I reckon you get more car for the money for the evo, but it costs more to run and maintain also. + I'm biased. Best bet is to go and drive both, and see which really grabs you.

The reason it's 4,500 miles is due to the AYC fluid needing replacing otherwise diff problems may appear which would be v. costly.
Like I said previously, they are 2 very different cars and so the best bet is to go and test drive both and see which one takes your fancy.
As for comparing fuel consumption, unless everyone drives exactly the same, fuel consumption figures don't really mean much do they? I can drive my Evo and get 20-25mpg or I can drive it and get 10mpg or less so it varies quite widely depending upon driving style.
