Default MSA STAGE RALLY ROLL CAGE REQUIREMENTS

hi all, im just about to start stripping my 93 impreza for stage rallying. i need to order a roll cage but dont know which one i need! i dont want to contact an MSA scrutineer just yet as i dont want to pay the money! the MSA book doesn't actually say EXACTLY what you need to satisfy MSA requirements. anyone out there help me??? is a multipoint bolt in acceptable?? or does it need to be a full weld in with strut anchors front and back???? i just want the minimum on order to compete. thanks

yes you can fit a bolted in cage , you need door bars as well , the OMP or Safety Devices ones are fine , ones like the cusco ones fitted in some of the import cars are not up to spec so I have been told , I helped strip a car last week to have it sent off to have a cage fitted , but they are fitting a weld in sparco cage , it cost him £450 but its £1000 to fit and paint the inside and boot

The bolt in OMP cage is about £350 , Peter Lloyd rallying has one of these in stock - 01656 724777

A thought:
Call Alyn at AS Performance - Rally Motorsport Specialists as he does the real thing to Imprezas.
Not sure, but i think you need a multipoint.

Safety devices will be fine. Probably the best budget option as the omp cages i've seen don't look good.

I've built a rally car myself, so if you'd like any advice or even thoughts on the subject feel free to PM me.

BTW as a first rally car I would strongly advise against an impreza/ any 4wd turbo machine.

Oh yeah.. and you can fit a bolt-in cage yourself, but 'bolt-in' is a highly optimistic way of wording it

You need to be handy with a welder.

Surely the blue book absolutely defines the safety equipment that is required for each class?

Of course it does, that's it's purpose. It's just a bit hard to follow.

K has requirements for rallying. K37.8 is the safety bits for special stage rallying. K37.8.1 says safety roll over bars to Q1.5.1 drawing no 3 (steel mandatory) with door bars to Q1.2.5(b).

Q1 says rally cars use cages to Q1.5.4 (which seems to talk about single seaters I admit). Q1.2 covers the mounting to the car. Q1.3 lists the minimum requirements for thickness, diameter and materials. But drawing Q3 is the critical one, it shows what the minimum cage must consist of and Q9 and Q12 the door bars and optional additional bracing.

A bolt in cage is fine provided it's a) in accordance with the above for layout, materials, diameters, thicknesses and b) mounted in accordance with the rules regarding the right thickness and size plates welded into the floor pan and the right number and diameter of bolts used to bolt it down.

I was going to reply that the cage you pm'd is definetly ok. I think the above confirms it too though
