Question STI8 and STI9

They both seem the same to me.

Somebody tell me whats diff please.

Is it ok to run a STI8 on 95RON as an everyday car and keeping the revs down?

Cant always get my hands on Optimax so i used to run my MY00 on 95RON then use optimax when I was going to boot it.

where can I read up on STI8-9?

the sti9 had the small extension on the rear arches as the track was made wider for better handling.

And here why referring to sti8, 9 etc is bobbins. There are no such cars, the last sti number was 6. Please use MY as no one knows what you are refering too.

Martx, from his description I hazard he is referring to an MY05 car.

So correct though if you keep saying STi 9 is a 2.5ltr hawk eye I'll just point out that my JDM STI would (if the numbering had kept up) be an STi 9 which is an MY03 blobeye model.
The UK would have started on an STi 1, so for UK cars you would have to say it was an STi 5/6 now v 13 for japan.

we have had this discussion lotsof times and basically the UK cars don't really follow numbering system that the JDM cars do.............

by JDM a v8 would be last of bug-eye and v9 would be first of blob-eye...........

No such thing, as Alyn quotes below, no one can settle on the correct format.

Hi Ray,

Super unleaded only is what the manufacturers specify, so you should use fuel which is 97 ron and above.

I think most people refer to the STi8 being MY03/04, and STi9 being MY05.

in which case there are a few differences, largely chassis mods - the MY05 effectively has the Spec C suspension settings - longer wheelbase, wider rear track, larger width wheels to sit the RE070 tyres on (these are also different tyres to the 03/04 cars), stronger wheel hubs, adjustable centre diff, different front diff (not so 'snatchy'). the wheels are a different design to.
these mods made the 05 cars less understeery, a bit noisier (more tyre rummble) and a bit more sensitive to camber changes - but much more progressive and planted when pressing on. loads more grippy too.
the 05 cars interiors are also better - nicer sterring wheel and better dash, with better climate control etc - still the same crap stereo though!

Ive had both, and the 05 looks a bit meaner and is the better overall car!

they actualy tel u too use 98ron on the my03 sti type uk,so def stick with no less than the bp ultimate, which is 97ron,the my05 or sti 9 wotever u want to call it has a wider rear track, which is why it has the small flares, dccd and the ***** for the heater controls r different, door cards are slightly different too, thats pritty much it.

Thats even more confusing
The STi 8 would have been a bug eye, so you are getting people calling a blobeye an STi 8, and the fact that the JDM cars are so much different than the euro counterparts..... its easier just to stick with type UK 2002/3/4/5/6 or if you use the numbering then only on JDM cars

not really more confusing - most people refer to the bug-eye STi as an STi7, as the last of the classics were STi6.

just natural progression of the numbering, which Subaru dropped themselves, but it seems to live on, like all good mythology!

Not confusing to me either...

Sti 1-6 = early to late classics

Sti 7=bugeye

Sti 8 =blobeye

Sti 9 = hawkeye

Perhaps my understanding is technically incorrect but i know what the poster is referring to and lots of others do.

100RON fuel is readily available in Japan and as such putting 95RON into it would really cause some trouble.

and me - the 05 cars are blobs, with the diff wheels and rear wheel arch blisters, I believe these are generally referred to as STi9's; look similar to STi8 blobeye, but are quite different underneath.

the hawk eye I belive is referred to as STi10!

Mr RA - isnt that what I said? I think we are agreeing. What's available in japan isnt relevant, what its designed to run on is. Its only a problem if the ECU cannot back off timing to reduce knock to an acceptable level.

The newer cars appear to have better scope within the ECU to retard timing from what I have read. But I wouldnt use 95 in any JDM.

agree. I wouldnt put 95RON in a JDM

Hmm running a STI Type UK maybe a problem if i cant always get my hands on 97RON.

Haing Octane Boost is an option but it still does not always solve my problem

Youll cause less confusion; and be less confused if you refer to them by their model year Ray. STI8/STI9 are made-up names so you cant really be sure what people are referring to when they use them.
