hi guys i was hoping i could ask some advice iv fallen for the looks of the evo 5 i own an 94 sti was planing on taking this to about 400bhp the thing im worried about tho is if i did this which would cost maybe £2000 maybe more the car would still only be worth £4000 im thinkin about selling up and saving for an evo 5 the looks are lovely never drove one so carnt comment on performance.i was hoping if any of u guys or girls could tell me what ud do in the situation.thanx

i have had EVO 4+6+7

and now driving one of the best subarus you can get - STI Twin scroll turbo

the reason i sold the evos is because they are so EASY to drive , it doesnt give you any feedback, but with subarus YOU are the one who is controlling the car, not the ECU

when i am in the evo, i can do corners faster but its not fun to drive

evos are corking motors,but i dont think you can make them look as nice as you can a scooby,the performance is not that different,and nothing but nothing sounds like a scooby and that does it for me every time.besides its the driver not the car when its comes to driving a car fast and under control

I had a IV a while ago,

They do not sound as good as the scooby.
When the AYC kicked in it was a strange sensation, probably a lack off feel.

The idea when the AYC kicks in is to keep your foot down on the throttle and to point it in the direction you want to head.
There are a few people that have counter steered whilst it has kicked in and lost control / spun out.

The power delivery is very smooth and linear with now kick to speak of.

On the plus side they are easier to tune, add a Walbro pump, ARP con rod bolts, a decent boost controler, and a Ralliart ecu and your straight up to 1.5 bar.

what model impreza u got mate? my 94 sti is on its standard gold 16s black skirts handles and rear bumper extensions i think im finding that it looks ugly with these. could transform the car with maybe new wheels and sum colour coding i think its stupid things like this that make me think about getting an evo.i must admit tho the impreza has not once let me down in the year ive owned it

I agree completely, I just sold my Evo 4 and driving was so easy, there was no work for the driver at all. This may be preferred by some people but after a while you may want the raw feel of the subaru again.

Getting an Evo 5 up to 400bhp will be a lot easier than getting your STI to around that level, also the Evo is more likely to give you a better residual value than the STI. Value wise it would be best to sell your STI and either save for the Evo or better still save for longer and get a newage JDM Spec-C RA

what ive done to mine might not suit everyone but here goes.
its a silver wrx import,ive put a front splitter on it with a section for a long numberplate on it,and chrome mesh in big rectangular void in bumper behind it.carcoal swosh & star graphics down the side & on boot.17" black alloys.roof scoop.facelift front end with sti8 bonnet scoop & rb5 bonnet vents.sti8 rear spoiler,black mudflaps.black indicators & side repeators.afterburner rear led lights.twin headlight conversion.im sure ive forgot some things,but should give you an idea.i think it looks awsome and it turns heads everywhere.might not be to everyones taste but i did it for me.by the way stainless from the engine back with 5" slashcut back box,sounds unreal

I bought DrEaM Evo 7 from him after having the Evo bug for sometime, I always wanted a Evo and when I finally got one I was happy for about a week until the Evo bug wore off, to be honest it was fast and it handled very well, but it was not exciting to drive, I think your either a Scooby man or a Evo man, some people me included go from Scooby to Evo and prefer the Scooby, and some people go from Scooby to Evo and dont look back!

Hull Sti, Id say go for the Evo mate, at least then you know which car you would really like to own once you have owned the 2 cars, If you keep your Scooby your always going to think "what if I had the Evo", Best to go for it, and if you dont like it, im pretty sure you could swap it back for a scoob!

What about EVO running/servicing costs? Newage ones are expensive in comparison to Scoobys. I would imagine older classics are the same, anyone able to confirm?

You should lose a fair chunk of money on an Evo 5 if you buy now, as your buying at their current prices. Its only a year before they wont need SVA'ing to bring into the country.

Importers will click on, bring in loads, flood the market, drive down prices, and lose you a fair chunk of money

This is one of the reasons i never went for an Evo 5, ontop of the servicing costs etc etc

Talking about swaping to an Evo.... and whether costs of getting a EVO5 would be something worth taking into consideration. My reference to newage and classics was for Evos. I enquired about Evos a while back and running costs scared me off.

The running costs are bad for the EVO's i now see them as a second car for weekend and occasional weekday use.

I have had my scoob for 9 months now and 16k miles later no problems tyres still have life left in them, but for the evo i would be approaching my 4th service and second set of tyres.

Evo's are very expensive to run! I would never have one as my main car and use it as my daily drive, but as a second car then you shouldnt have a problem and for example if a clutch went your talking close to a £1k, I had servicing bills from the first owner and most the services from Mitsubishi where in the region of £800 a service. So make sure you do your homework on maitaining and running a Evo!!

not a big fan of evos, m8 had a V plate rallyart not sure if its a 6? but tbh i wasnt that impressed even though i have only owned n/a cars it would put a big grin on my face but it never, i have always like the look and especially the sound of the scoob, imo the classic is the best shape also would have the new scooby over the evo.

Why go to Mitsubishi for servicing?

Upto 2002 its technically a better car than any scoob (Spec C is the only comparisson) But its down to driving enjoyment. Ive had loads of scoobs, couple of Honda's and a tweaked Evo8. The Evo defies all logic, and I love it. I also never see antoher one for weeks, but see about 10 scoobs per day.

Beyond me why anyone would go to a dealer for servicing, But the guy who had the car before me had it done there, and trust me they where scary, I think one service and skiming the brakes at Mitsubishi was about £2k!

Dont get me wrong the Mitsubishi Evo is a very quick and very good handling car, but a lot of people buy a Evo as they are thinking with there heart and not with there head, Probably a reason there are a lot of bad examples out there, as there are to many people who buy them and cant afford to have them properly serviced.

ive just sold my 360bhp evo6 and looking for a late uk sti.

the evo is a rapid car off the line but i had a go with a ppp packed uk sti a few months back and there wasnt much init after 70mph.

the ayc is a great thing if you just want to go fast round corners, not so good if you like experimenting with the power or the back end mid bend as the ayc dont like to play.

ride quality and mpg is no where near as good as a scooby wich is the main reason im swapping to a scoob. on a run your lucky to get 24mpg and about 19mpg around town and about 10mpg if your giving it some.

oil servicing is at 4500m and 9k service inc ayc fluids.

clutches last about 10k if your lucky some have been known to last 30k some 2k and a new flywheel should be fitted everytime there replaced, total inc labour is around £700 for std spec units or £1k+ for uprated items.

heavy on brakes and warp front discs like no ones buisness.

A freind of mine has a late sti and i really do like its road manners, very smoth and solid compared to the evo wich was quite raw and brash and was never relaxed on the motorway like a the scoob and his runing costs cuts mine in half, all these people who say "there isnt much in it" dont belive them, there full of crap.

If the evo was a 2nd car wich i just used for track days and a sunny weekends it would be fine but not a good option for a everyday car.

Hmmm. An STi PPP has about 290 bhp max (not 305 that they claim)

Losing out 70 bhp to your Evo and there was nothing in it?

MPG is the same on my Evo as the STi. You also dont have to be totally religious with the 4500 mile thing. Not much in it imo

i was pulling away steady but not as much as i would of thought giving the extra power.

the best i can get out of my evo going to work and back (urban) is 20mpg off boost as much as poss. a mate who used to have a sti could make 28mpg off boost.

I'm running 360 ish bhp on an EVO 8 and get 21mpg driving hard (normally) and 24mpg when being nice.

Only thing to remember is the Evo 6 is an 8 year old technology car, so the new Sti with VVT engine etc will be slightly better.

Also, if you do 15000 miles per year, that would cost you:
Evo - @ 20mpg is £3068 (based on 90p litre)

STi - @ 24 mpg is £2557
In the STi at say 24 mpg (you wont be off boost and getting 28 mpg all the time!)

£511 wouldnt be enough to convince me to change a car! Plus that figure drops if you do less than 15k miles per year...
