Default Are these gauges any good?

Hello all,

Just browsing through some gauges, and came across these...

eBay.co.uk: Smoked Stepper Red White Turbo Boost Oil Gauge Free P&P (item 110079013171 end time 23-Jan-07 15:18:56 GMT)

Of course i'd like some Defi, Apexi, Greddy gauges or whatever, but can't justify paying 3, 4, maybe 5 times the price of the ones on ebay for a car that i wont be tunning to massive spec. Looks like they change read when they hit the set peak too? Would be a nice touch if they done that.

Will probably be mounting them below the headunit so hopefully the flashing start up wont put me into a fit

Whats peoples opinions on these please?

Look very similar to these
Autogauge

These Autogauge ones can be supplied inc full subaru senders by Nick from Gaugeplace.

I asked recently and his reply was :
"In regards the complete package..3 GAUGES - BOOST/OIL PRESS/OIIL TEMP/ plus Cylinder 3 ADAPTOR PLUG/ plus REMOTE OIL PRESS ADAPTOR ..allows connection of original oil switch etc...All package including delivery would be £140.00"

Drop him an email : nickgilchrist@yahoo.com

Does anyone have any comments on these Autogauge ones?

So ontop of them you'd just need a sandwich plate and they'd be ready for instaling?

sorry guys, but stop being cheap and buy some defi gauges

The autogauge ,like swoosh are just cheap ****e,and no doubt will just fall apart or cease working

By the time you have finish buying thee gauges/pod/fitting adaptors you would only need another couple of hundred for a set of defi's,its just false economy in my eyes

I bought a set of those autogauge red clocks like the defi's,they went straight back and defis were ordered

just my own personal opinion though

No - Don't use a sandwich plate, they aren't accurate enough.

Use the oil feed area located above Cyl 3. (If you do a search in General Tech someone has fitted some DEFI's recently and that sender location is explained with pics). That price is for the full kit including the oil sender to fit above Cyl 3, so everything you need.

Note that the boost gauge is electrical rather than mechanical. A mechanical boost gauge requires a length of capilliary tube to be run from the T point under the bonnet into the gauge back itself. An electrical Boost gauge has a short piece if capilliary tubing to a seperate sender unit, then wires into the gauge. Apparently there's less chance of a kink in the tubing as it's only short. The pricipal is the same, they've just taken the sender out of the gauge and moved it under the bonnet.

Three gauges and carbon pod £150

Defi's even second hand £300 ish. Hear what your saying but couldn't justify the extra at the mo and don't need the extra functionality of Defi's on a road car really anyway!!

Just had a reply from the guy about the gauges in the origional post, and he's said more are available which is nice

I really cant justify spending an obsured amount of money on Defi's for a standard road car, im sure there was some going second hand in the for sale section for £470? Thats silly money! Yes Defi a very very good make when it comes to gauges, and if i was running a mega power impreza track car then i'd probably go for them. But on a standard road car i think its a bit overkill

I must admit I agree. I only want to keep an eye on the boost to make sure no leaks have sprung, the oil pressure to make sure nothing's amiss and the temp so I know when its warm enough to drive it like I sat on a wasp. 470quid is a bit much for me to spend on a set.

I know the standard set are boost, Oil Temp/Pressure. But should I be monitoring EGT as I believe that is far more likely to tell me if there's a problem early, and with decatting the up-pipe the standard EGT is missing so the ECU can't use that CEL me.

DEFI's are nice, but too expensive for me to justify and I want 52mm as I don't want a huge centre pod.

I bought a set, just waiting for them to arrive. I also have a 52mm defi boost gauge as well plus my AVC-R give's a boost reading, but like people say I cannot justify spending the best part of 500 quid on a set of defi's on a weekend only car.

I would rather spend the money on suspension upgrades etc.

THREAD HIJACK...................SORRY!!!

Just wondered,i have a set of gauges fitted already, but they look a bit old fashioned now so want to upgrade,so the question is,would i just have to swap the dials and connect upto the wiring etc that is already there.or would i have to have the new ones completely refitted???

yes you can matey

if your in no rush, just collect them as they come up on ebay,i bought a full setup from a scoobynet member, but before i did this i had a boost oil temp and the controller plus a pod,all sourced on ebay individually,in total it came to £190 for the above,i was just the oil pressure short,so it would have stood around £250 all in

we have also fitted a heads up display, this is a great way to go no need for the gauges, just buy the senders and a control unit and all the reading will be displayed onto the bottom corner of your windscreen,al-la corvette style

I've been searching like mad but have not been able to find these pics. Do you happen to know where i could get an exploded view engine diagram of where this is, or give a detailed description of what to look for please?

Will be fitting them myself/with the help of a friend, boost gauge will be a doddle its just the oil temp and pressure that i'll be needing some info on.

Thanks

I fitted Defi's a few weeks back, the allen key bolt can easily be seen when the intercooler is taken off, its the only one in the area so cant be mistaken jsut make sure you dont drop anything in the hole!! I can try get some pics if you like but the intercooler will be on although you can see the plug with it in place.

Yeah thanks Andy that'd be great, i might have a poke at fitting a knock link whilst im at it, as you have to take the intercooler to get to where that is fitted too don't you?

Can you get a price for the standard 3 gauge setup with subaru senders for oil temp and oil pressure. Oil temp to be taken from Cyl 3 pickup point and Oil pressure to allow OE oil pressure and gauge pressure.

Cheers.

Erm.....yeh....what that guy said

Would be handy if we could get everything in one kit (like any additional T pieces or whatever so we can use the extra and origional sensors etc) so we dont get stuck when it comes to fitting them
